I honestly think he would make a world class squad look mediocre. Like many have pointed out, it’s incredible that he keeps landing a job. He had Southampton on track to beat Derby’s record low season.

If anything, that makes Martin look worse. No manager knew McCarthy’s limitations better than he did, yet he put him in a system that exposed his biggest weakness: playing with the ball at his feet.

Martin’s football is suited to one place: the bin. The comparisons in this thread with Maresca are laughable, and mentioning Martin in the same sentence as Pep is borderline offensive. Beyond hoarding possession through pointless passes across the back, there’s nothing remotely similar. There’s no tactical intelligence behind his philosophy’ and no ability to adapt. Time and again, managers with far inferior squads have worked him out, outplayed him and made his supposed philosophy look exactly what it is: complete dogshite

I’d say he’s correctly rated as a dogshit manager by all the fanbases who’s had the displeasure of his management.

My father-in-law supports Southampton, so I watched plenty of them under Martin. He has one idea and absolutely nothing beyond it. No flexibility, no tactical nous, just suicideball regardless of the game. His better results often seemed to come when the players ignored him and went rogue. He’s the worst manager I’ve ever watched at this level.
