Dave Bassett opens up on Leicester City period

Nah you're just making excuses, Taylor was an England Manager and gave Beckham his international start. -
Dave Bassett opens up on Leicester City period and issues frank verdict on duo ByLeigh CurtisDerby County Writer 12:29, 22 NOV 2023 Dave Bassett said he enjoyed his time at Leicester City but felt some of Peter Taylor's player recruitment "wasn't very good". The former Sheffield United manager was appointed Foxes boss in 2001 with the task of trying to keep them in the Premier League. But Leicester were ultimately relegated before Bassett stepped aside to move into a director of football role handing the reins to his assistant Micky Adams. Speaking on the Undr the Cosh podcast, Bassett said the club had felt the effects of having sold Emile Heskey to Liverpool a year before his arrival. "When I went there, there had been some crap recruitment," he said. "Emile Heskey had been sold. They had brought in Ade Akinbiyi. He was a good lad, worked hard, but didn't have it. Trevor Benjamin was the same. They spent about £8m on those two. I like Peter Taylor a lot but his recruitment during that period wasn't very good." Bassett also claimed how Adams felt the heat from the fans that he felt led to the latter's departure. "It was a good club, Leicester. I enjoyed it. Then I stepped aside to let Micky Adams in. They wanted a young manager really. Harry Redknapp had recommended me for the job and I'd got it. They liked the idea of me bringing Micky but the idea was to let him do it a year or so later. He got them promoted the following season but relegated the season after that. "Mick left Leicester and he didn't have to. The board weren't after him. They were mid-table but he got upset because he'd put Dave Connolly on as a sub then pulled him off right near the end. The fans started singing you don't know what you're doing. Mick's skin wasn't as thick as you thought it was."

https://the72.co.uk/2023/11/21/leicester-city-face-battle-in-chase-for-danish-star-mls-club-willing-to-pay-near-7m/ I know this will help with jobs but it's just a short term gain I'd have thought the levelling up most people need is in their daily living costs, health/dentists etc not filling in underpasses. The Council is on the brink of being unable to declare budget. -
https://the72.co.uk/2023/11/21/leicester-city-face-battle-in-chase-for-danish-star-mls-club-willing-to-pay-near-7m/ Leicester City are among the teams to have shown an interest in Bodo/Glimt midfielder Albert Gronbaek, as per Nettavisen. Leicester City have enjoyed a fantastic season to date but they’ll be hopeful of strengthening where possible in January to bolster their promotion hopes. Despite back-to-back losses before the international break, the Foxes remain top of the Championship table, though they’re now tied on points with Ipswich Town. The January window isn’t too far away now, so Leicester will have their eyes on potential targets. Now, claims of interest in Danish ace Gronbaek have emerged. As per a report from Nettavisen, Leicester City are among those showing an interest in the Bodo/Glimt star ahead of January. There could be strong competition for his signature though. Gronbaek, 22, returned 14 goals and eight assists in 46 games across all competitions last season. He’s managed four goals and an assist in the UEFA Europa Conference League this campaign too, with Norway’s Eliteserien yet to begin. One to watch Gronbaek has been among Denmark’s brighter talents for a while now. He started out in his native with Aarhus GF but has gone from strength to strength since joining Norwegian force Bodo/Glimt, tallying 20 goals and 11 assists in 66 games. He mainly plays as a central midfielder but has been deployed on the wings and as a no.10 before, so he’d bring some versatility to Enzo Maresca’s Leicester City ranks. The Championship is a highly competitive league and the Foxes should know they can’t rest on their laurels in the promotion race; the last two matches should have taught them that if they weren’t already aware. A move for a player like Gronbaek would really

https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/praet-ndidi-yunus--leicester-8921761 Praet, Ndidi, Yunus – Leicester City injury latest and return dates ahead of Watford clash Latest injury news from LeicestershireLive as table-topping Foxes begin their preparations for Championship clash with Watford at the King Power Stadium on Saturday ByJordan Blackwell 11:09, 21 NOV 2023 The imminent return of three injured players may give Enzo Maresca a selection headache for Leicester City’s Championship fixture against Watford on Saturday (3pm kick-off). The City head coach expected Dennis Praet, Wilfred Ndidi, and Yunus Akgun to all be close to fitness after the international break. If they can prove they’re ready in training this week, they could come into contention to feature against the Hornets, where City will be looking to put back-to-back losses behind them. Praet has been out since mid-August with a back injury, so may require more time in training to get himself up to speed. But he was back on the grass before the international break and so there will be hope he is close to being ready by the end of the week. Ndidi and Yunus have been on the sidelines with muscle issues since the end of last month. While Maresca said they’d be back after the international fixtures, neither were able to join training in any capacity before the team broke up. l If all three are fit, Maresca will have some decisions to make. Ndidi has been the manager’s most regular starter alongside Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the advanced midfield positions, but Praet has been described by the Italian as the most suited to the role. Both would be pushing to oust Cesare Casadei, although there's a possibility that Ndidi could play in the deeper midfield role with Harry Winks suspended. For Yunus, he gives Maresca another option out wide, with Abdul Fatawu and Stephy Mavididi starting most matches over the past few weeks. Kasey McAteer did make his first appearance in the 11 since September in the defeat at Middlesbrough though. At the Riverside Stadium, Tom Cannon was involved in a matchday squad for the first time, and so he will be in contention for his debut against Watford. It also leaves just one player unavailable in Callum Doyle. The on-loan defender is back in the gym after knee surgery in September, but it is not expected that he will be ready to play again until the new year. City also have a couple of promising youngsters making their comebacks. Will Alves has now played close to 90 minutes for the under-21s since recovering from an ACL tear. Sammy Braybrooke, a couple of weeks behind Alves, will be hoping to feature for the development squad soon.

Crime-plagued Leicester underpasses to be transformed in £15 million project Leicester City Council will put up £3 million of the cash on the busy city junction initiative ByHannah RichardsonLocal Democracy Reporter 10:16, 21 NOV 2023UPDATED11:04, 21 NOV 2023 A project which will see a major city junction remodelled and its crime-plagued underpasses removed has been given Government backing. Leicester City Council has been awarded more than £12 million to transform the St Margaret’s junction, on the inner ring road, in the latest round of the Government’s levelling-up funding. The underpasses on St Margaret’s Way were closed off earlier this year, with the council branding them a “magnet for crime and anti-social behaviour”. The closure was part of the council’s bid to create a more attractive walking and cycling route along the busy city centre road. It is proposing to ultimately fill-in all three of the underpasses as part of a wider remodel of the junction which connects St Margaret’s Way, Burleys Way, Vaughan Way and Church Gate. New bus lanes will also be created on sections of St Margaret’s Way and Sanvey Gate, the authority added. This will improve journey times and reliability by creating a direct link between St Margaret’s Bus Station and the A6, A50 and Anstey Lane bus corridors, Leicester City Council hopes. New cycle tracks are also planned for parts of St Margaret’s Way and Sanvey Gate to link to recently created and planned works expanding the citywide network of safer routes for cyclists. Footpaths are set be widened and improved, the council added, with new parallel crossings for pedestrians and cyclists to be introduced across the busy junction. New landscaping in the area is also on the cards and Leicester City Council aims to create a stronger link between the city centre and the medieval St Margaret’s Church building. The proposed improvements are intended to encourage more walking and cycling, with transport surveys showing that currently just three per cent of people using the junction do so on foot or bike, the council said. The scheme will also help to promote new development and regeneration in the area, including providing the infrastructure needed to support investment in new city centre homes to help meet rising demand, it believes. Leicester City Council will be putting up £3 million in addition to the £12,177,706 from the Levelling Up Fund. Work is expected to get underway in 2025. Artist's impression of how the remodelled St Margaret’s junction - which connects St Margaret’s Way, Burleys Way, Vaughan Way and Church Gate - might look Artist's impression of how the remodelled junction might look (Image: Leicester City Council) Councillor Adam Clarke, deputy city mayor for climate, culture and economy, said: “This is great news for the city and a fantastic opportunity to build on the improvements we have already seen from the award-winning redevelopment of St Margaret’s bus station – the first operationally net zero bus station building in the UK. -

I doubt Enzo thought we'd be anywhere near 8 points ahead of 3rd place. As for the matches his system is still very much in it's infancy mainly because the team is still learning how to make it work better and because he's playing it with a number of players not suited to the system. However this system is his long term aim. I'm also sure although he'll be happy with what we've achieved he's obviously not going to be happy where we're under achieving with our movement, passing and finishing. I'd also reckon that with the more suitable and better players we'll be moving the ball forward quicker though the lines and that will give us better and more opportunities to score. That I believe and hope is when not only will we dominate games but also entertain us more. Of course that is, assuming we get promoted we'll be competing against better teams. They'll be those 6 or 7 teams that will be and always will have better players than us, it's the other 17/18 we need to be better than and this system with the better and more suitable players could give us the edge in doing that.

https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/enzo-maresca-pencils-leicester-city-8910284 The Leicester City manager will discuss with the club's hierarchy this week the plans for the January transfer window the scope for improving the squad in the new year Jordan Blackwell 08:00, 17 NOV 2023 Enzo Maresca will sit down with the Leicester City hierarchy this international break to sketch out the club’s January transfer plans as he looks to improve his squad. City have arrived at the November break on top of the Championship table, but Maresca’s mantra is that they can always get better, and that extends to the make-up of the squad too. Talks will now be held with director of football Jon Rudkin and the recruitment team to look at the sort of business City want to do, and have the capacity to do. “For me, I always said the same: there is always room to improve,” Maresca said last week. “So even in that (the transfer window), there’s room to improve. We are still in November and it’s still early, but this international break we can sit with the club and discuss a little bit. We’ve not had any discussions yet.” Before the close of the summer window, City had tried to sign a new midfielder, with Manchester City’s James McAtee at Seagrave ahead of a switch before Sheffield United stole in and took the England Under-21 international back to Bramall Lane. But, that does not mean City still desire a new midfielder. Interest in McAtee was partly because of Dennis Praet’s back injury, but the Belgian is now back in training and should be playing again by the end of the month. And even with Wilfred Ndidi heading to the Africa Cup of Nations for a month in January, Maresca can call on winger Yunus Akgun, who he has used in a central position, while the manager also has high hopes for teenage talent Will Alves as he returns from injury. It may be that a new left-sided defender is City’s focus. After Callum Doyle was ruled out until January following knee surgery, Maresca said it’s the one position in his team where he doesn’t have two options. James Justin has been filling in well, but the manager prefers a left-footed player in the role to help with building attacks from the back. City have been linked with former Blackburn and Nottingham Forest forward Ben Brereton Diaz, now at Villarreal, but even with Kelechi Iheanacho and Patson Daka at Afcon, and the latter potentially leaving in January, they still have Jamie Vardy and Tom Cannon to play up front, plus the likes of Stephy Mavididi, Abdul Fatawu, and Kasey McAteer to play on the wings. As well as Daka, goalkeepers Daniel Iversen and Danny Ward could also depart, with neither making a single appearance so far this term, but Harry Souttar, despite nearly moving to Rangers in the summer, has said he will stick around to fight for his place.
