Firstly, you've done the right thing in reaching out (to Stepchange, not just on here!). Secondly, have you considered contacting Citizens Advice Bureau? There's various options you can undertake but it may depend on the full debt level - https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money/. They can help you go through the process and double-check it actually is the right option for you and guide you through what you need to do before, during and after whichever option you choose. Bankruptcy is never taken lightly but it is possible to get back on track afterwards. It'll affect your credit rating but go through the right channels and still have support afterwards and you can still open some kinds of new bank accounts or take out phone contracts etc. There's usually a 12 month period for bankruptcy that you have to endure before you're 'discharged'. In that 12 months though you have to legally declare you have been made bankrupt to any company you look to borrow/take money from i.e. banks/building societies. You go through an interview for your bankruptcy application. It can be very stressful on top of the actual reality of being in the debt position you're in, but it's the process that has to be completed from the official receiver itself. Everything after bankruptcy is basically managed by a trustee, so all decisions on what you do financially goes through them. Anything sold is decided by them to then pay off your creditors. Other options may have included a Debt Relief Order but as you have a car on finance I believe that counts as an 'asset' so you may not be eligible. If you have an accumulated debt of over £50k you're also not eligible.
