Grewks Posted 16 January 2016 Posted 16 January 2016 Coming away from Villa park I was, like everyone, bitterly disapointed. The lack of energy, the impression that Vardy had a pre-match bet for most amount of passes to an opposition team in history, the lethargic and apparent lack of confidence from an algerian who should be riding high on the crest of a wave, instead fearing to make any sort of risky play. It was a villa performance which left me wondering how they have a higher points total than Derby in their 'record-breaking' season. Yet after all that....we missed a penalty, a good chance from drinkwater and a miss from ulloa which made me question whether he is trapped between a parallel universe and this one resulting in a 3 second delay. It was, for me, our best defensive performance of the season. Fuchs was fuchs, simpson was solid despite riyad again leaving his man. Huth and Morgan man mountains, with Morgan proving he is currently the form defender in the premier league. But with all this, have we lost our attacking intent as a result? Are we perhaps a better 'team' without mahrez?
Donut Posted 16 January 2016 Posted 16 January 2016 In a nutshell, there is a time to counter attack, there is a time to be patient and keep the ball. There are times and areas to press the ball, there are areas to retain our shape and not press the ball. It seems like we have lost this tactical balance since the Liverpool game and beyond. I felt we had this balance in the first half tonight and then it disappeared sadly. Any team would be worse without Mahrez.

Tonight we were more solid when he wasn't on the pitch. He didn't track cissokho which left to poor shinji getting replaced....and then he didn't press the centre half resulting in his own sub.

Youd also lose 15 goals and most of the creative threat without him. Yeah, he had a poor night, no question. But he is a massive player for us, and if we didnt have him for any game this season we would be much worse off.

The team was worse tonight when he was on the pitch.

Yeah, it was worse TONIGHT i agree. But i dont agree with your basic point, as he has put in performances that have been central to key wins such as Newcastle away, Swansea away, West Brom away, Chelsea home, and the points against Spurs and Man Utd at home too.

Looks like he can't be arsed!.. For some reason his confidence has been sapped away.. When he stepped up to take that penalty I think most of us thought... He's not going to score!.. Including Vardy by his body language.

There is no possible way that it can be argued that Mahrez isnt a crucial player for us. Saying he looks like he "cant be arsed" is ridiculous.

I must have been watching the wrong player in the last 4/5 games? He's been piss poor and missed two penalties!.. His performance today was nothing short of embarrassing!

oxtonfox Posted 16 January 2016 Posted 16 January 2016 Think the Mahrez pen misses are all about confidence. He has not played well since Everton and it shows in his run ups . Look at Harry Kane his last two pens show how confident he is and you got the feeling he would score against us and today. I knew he would miss today and I think he did too. Same with Vardy now too in front of goal Enough said

But when he isn't on form its like playing with 10 men. For a few months now i've been saying to a few fellow fans that we need to replace albrighton with a winger who assists and scores more. But, the last few weeks, i've been thinking that replacing riyad for a game or two wouldn't do any harm. Also the 'can't be arsed' comment is one i can sympathize with. He is the only player on the team which doesn't carry out his defensive duty.

Fatigue is the only explanation, and of course vardy has an excuse with his recent groin injury. But Mahrez?.. He's just gone completely into his shell.

His lack of defensive work is costing the 'team'. He can get away with it when impacting the game, but tonight i think we would've created more and controlled the game more with 2 albrightons.

Hate to say it but Albrighton was poor as well and has been for a few weeks....
foxes21 Posted 16 January 2016 Posted 16 January 2016 Would be tempting to play the 4-3-3 these next 4 league games, with Inler or Amartey coming in. Would be a bit harsh on Shinji though

Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 16 January 2016 Posted 16 January 2016 Really concerned trams have figured how to play against us. Something about us isn't right currently. Defence does look a little better although should have had a clean sheet today. Mahrez seems to be made non existent by opposition. They don't give him space. They also show him on his weaker right foot and get more physical with him than before. He doesn't like it and he doesn't seem right currently. Vardy to me needs a week free of a game. Just seems to lack his sharpness and his form seems to have really dipped. Would have liked him to have had the pen to reignite his goalscoring form
Grewks Posted 16 January 2016 Author Posted 16 January 2016 Hate to say it but Albrighton was poor as well and has been for a few weeks.... See my other posts...i've talked about replacing albrighton for weeks with a more creative player. But....at least marc carries out his defensive duties. Mahrez makes us a worse 'team' at times.

Have teams 'figured out' something which means he defends worse aswell?
Sampson Posted 16 January 2016 Posted 16 January 2016 I thought it was good management dropping him earlier in the season against Norwich to let him know he wasn't undroppable and the same at the end of last season after his poor form after returning from the ACON. I love him but you do wonder if he's one of those players who needs reminding he's not undroppable every now and again to stop him getting complacent. We all know he's a much more creative player than Albrighton, but I do wish he had Albrighton's defensive work rate and positioning and willingness to help out his full-back in tight games where it's not really coming off for him like today. I get what you're saying as he's obviously a great player and everyone has off games, it's just, even during those off games, you wish he'd still try and help out full-back and try to help us defend in tight games more. I love him, but it's felt like he's hidden a bit in the past 4 or 5 matches.

Len Finsbury Posted 16 January 2016 Posted 16 January 2016 He doesn't look right to me at the minute. Someone mentioned 'can't be arsed', I don't know about that but he has definitely lost his mojo. We're talking about a player that's constantly smiling while he's playing but he does;t look like he's enjoying himself at the minute. Some people have mentioned that when we're up against it, he's not the guy to have on the pitch and I can see why. However, he's proven previously that he's the perfect man to have on the pitch under these conditions as he can create something from nothing in the blink of an eye. Whatever's causing this blip in form, he needs to sort it out one way or another. We can't afford a passenger. Whether this is transfer related, I don't know but it's a possibility.
