ceredigion Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 I bought this record in 1980. It was released to celebrate the 2nd Division title. And Jock predicted we would win the 1st Division next season (hence the ''champions we'll be'' bit). Haven't heard it for well over 30 years and I'd forgotten what a classic it was. I wonder what happened to my copy and what was on the B-side?

Because he had such a strong Scottish accent, it was very difficult to understand what he actually said but it sounded inspiring!
ceredigion Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 I think I've just remembered what was on the B-side. If I'm right it was an interview of Jock Wallace by Neville Foulger or Bill Anderson or someone like that about the forthcoming season, and not one word of what Jock said was intelligible. If you played the record backwards or at a different speed, he made much more sense.

ceredigion Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 Could have been. I was in Town Hall Square for the civic reception. Yobs jumping in the fountain etc. One of my favourite seasons. Only 12/13 at the time but I saw every home match and around half a dozen away games too.

ceredigion Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 Some great hairstyles and moustaches in there too. Basically footballers looked like the rest of us back then and weren't that much better at football either.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 Alan Young had such a great season, ably assisted by the likes of Bobby Smith and Martin Henderson Incredible when you take into account we only had ten players!
ceredigion Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 Incredible when you take into account we only had ten players! Mark Wallington is missing. Perhaps he was tending his marrows at the time.
kushiro Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 I love this so much! How I have I never heard it before? It's like a Monty Python sketch. Is this actually the players singing? If so, they must have been pissing themselves laughing. It could be easily adapted - substitute 'Ranieri' for 'Jock Wallace' it all fits.. I think I've just remembered what was on the B-side. If I'm right it was an interview of Jock Wallace by Neville Foulger or Bill Anderson or someone like that about the forthcoming season, and not one word of what Jock said was intelligible. We need to hear that b-side, guys! Get searching those attics.
UpTheLeagueFox Posted 27 April 2016 Posted 27 April 2016 Perhaps it was with Steve Lambden, the Ian Stringer of the eighties. That's not Steve Lambden. That photo is Keith Daniel. Both of them worked for Central. Lammo was definitely at RL though, possibly around the same time as Dennis Coath - I'm guessing late 70s / early 80s. Way before my time there.

1972 Fox Posted 27 April 2016 Posted 27 April 2016 Why is Bob Paisley standing next to Jock Wallace on that Champions 1980 picture?
ceredigion Posted 27 April 2016 Posted 27 April 2016 Both Jock and Bob Paisley were from a different time. In think Bob Paisley took part in the liberation of Rome with the Eighth Army in 1944 and Jock did his national service combating the communist insurgency in Malaya in the early 50s, crawling through the undergrowth with a knife between his teeth. Blokes like that tended to command respect in the dressing room.
