Attending Euro 2016 Matches - Advice Needed

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi,

I've managed to get tickets to the Lyon semi-final next week.  Would anyone who has been to a match at the Euros be able to tell me how early I need to get to the stadium ahead of kick-off given extra security checks etc etc?  Any other pointers appreciated too.  Was planning on going just with ticket, phone, passport and money in my pockets to avoid bag search hassles etc.

Thanks!

In Paris they had a security check done by the police about 200 metres away from another security search done by stewards just before the turnstiles.

I'd say 30 minutes from first check to getting to your seat should be enough. they don't sell beer in the grounds so getting in too early isn't a good idea!

Well they do sell beer but it's 0.5% Carlsberg and it tastes like ringworm. I got in nice and early to soak up the atmosphere and got pissed on so 30-45 mins beforehand sounds about right.

What do you mean they don't sell beer, they have some lovely 0.5% Carlsberg...

I was at games in Lyon and the Stadium is miles out of the City, you need to get the metro then shuttle bus, or walk to the station and get one of the special trams, both options take around 30 - 40 minutes.

You could get an uber, but it will cost between 30 and 100 euros depending on traffic and tariff and take 20-50 minutes. Because of this we never had much delay getting through checks with at most 2 busses turning up at one time, there is a ticket check by the police which also thins the crowd and then a bag check/pat down by security with  plenty of people there to search you and they aren't that thorough so get people through quickly and to the turnstiles. It took about 10 minutes to get through both security checks and into the ground.

You would want to start making your way to the ground at least an hour before kick off, depending on your starting point.  If you get  the metro to Vaux-en-Velin (I think) then there is bar there and you can have a few drinks before a 10 minute shuttle bus to the ground, but it gets busy.

There is a fan park around the stadium, but we never found out if they served booze, leaving the stadium is also a ball ache, make you sure you get the number 2 shuttle bus, the tram was hot and rammed and the queues very long, an unpleasant experience all round. If you get the shuttle bus 3 it says city centre but it drops you at an expo centre where you have to get a tram to then get the metro.

It took us maybe 20 minutes with the security searches in Marseille and Lens. Don't take any electrical equipment- portable phone charger etc. I had to bin mine

There were some bizarre confiscations, one person had their cigarettes and lighter taken off them, yet people were openly smoking in the stands in every game I was at, we had our small bottle (75ml) of sun cream confiscated going into the fan zone, yet our mate had a 500ml bottle in his bag. They were inconsistent and frustrating but mainly pretty lax.

Yeh it depends who searched you basically. I couldn't take my LCFC flag into Marseille yet the Russians could take flares lol

That's odd, I took my portable phone charger to the fan park at Paris, the stadium in Marseille, and the fan park in Lyon and never had a problem! It's far bigger than my phone too. They're so inconsistent!

Thanks all - really appreciate it.  I'm staying in Bron so about 6 miles away from the stadium on the basis walking to and from the stadium may just be easier than the hassles of transport.

Cheers

If you're a fit Swiss bird capable of batting her eyelashes at a middle-aged steward you'll get through without having your bag searched.

Mind you, the bloke got an almighty bollocking off his supervisor after that happened, which delayed my entry to the ground by a few minutes.

Was in lille on Friday security was ok we took no longer than 20mins to get through although there was a bit of a crush at the entrance which peed a lot of people off other than that it was sound
