Rob1742 Posted 8 September 2016 Posted 8 September 2016 I like this thread. Discipline and procedure, versus individualism, and it goes further than the uniform. The school in question is being too rigid for my liking and I wouldn't like my son going to a school with that level of discipline. Some kids will react positively to it, but for others it will have a negative affect and they won't enjoy their experience, and so not thrive in that environment. My experience of school (many years ago), was that the focus was on exam results and following the rules, rather than preparing everyone for the journey after school whatever their academic level. I know it is a hell of a lot better these days though, which is a very good thing. If I was the head, I would have a uniform of sorts, but keep it quite lose to enable kids to enjoy the fact that they are stretching the rules a little, which is a good thing for them to do.

Some of the problem (also having worked in a school) is that teachers are also expected (in some cases not all) to be parents as well as teachers. The lack of parenting or discipline or a care i've observed was shocking. Even to the extent that we were told to 'F88k off when trying to encourage some parents to parents evening. School, should be strict, it should be regimented and it should instil discipline and order to a child. This will create a level playing field for all children and also give them skills and attitude to be able to cope in the real world. They should also get full support and backing from the board and educational authorities. Again purely from my observations, is that teachers don't get the support they require, if they are under performing the parents kick off, if they are over performing the board kicks off. there is plenty of time for individualism, I don't think individualism comes from being able to where what you want, as most kids follow some sort of trend and still will even if they have to stick to a standard uniform. It's only my observations that

It's only my observations that I agree that teachers sometimes have to act like parents as well as teachers. I have a link into a school, so hear about what goes on, and it is frightening at times. Very difficult one really, and every kid is different, and has a different set of circumstances. I personally struggled with school, yet have achieved since. My views are obviously skewed by my personal situation, but I understand there is various situations.
Jon the Hat Posted 8 September 2016 Posted 8 September 2016 It is exactly the kids whose parents send them to school wearing the wrong stuff who need the discipline. Wankers.

Were you an English teacher? Btw I agree with you.

That's GREAT preparation for adult life. For shame.
