Atletico, penalties and a historical anecdote

Here's an interesting little conspiracy theory for you to mull over while you're chomping through your Easter eggs.

The last time Atletico lost a European knockout tie after winning the home leg 1-0 was all the way back in 1993/94 in a UEFA Cup second round tie v OFI Crete.

The Greek team won 2-0 in hugely controversial circumstances, namely that their decisive second goal came from a penalty that (almost certainly) did not cross the line. The then notorious Atletico president Jesus Gil (now deceased) tried through official channels to get the match replayed but his plea fell on deaf ears and Atletico were eliminated 2-1 on aggregate.

However, are Leicester (in 1997 in the same competition and again on Wednesday night) receiving payback for a little club unjustly knocking Atletico out of Europe with a dodgy spot kick all those years ago? Who can say...

Check out the YouTube footage of that game in Crete, especially the penalty and the scenes at the final whistle, and you'll see what all the fuss was about.

Type in key words OFI, Atletico, 1993 and you'll find a number of videos on there. Maybe someone would like to post a link of the best one.

That'd cover being cheated out by them in 1997. What's the conspiracy for this time?

Lord I had forgotten that Jesus Gil y Gil was the boss of Atletico. For those who have never heard of this fascist crook, the wikipedia entry is enlightening https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesús_Gil
