Getting a last minute train to or from Leicester could soon be a lot cheaper.

Virgin Trains East Coast, who provide tickets for the Leicester to London St Pancras line by East Midlands Trains, are planning to start selling advance tickets on the day of travel.

The cut-price advance fares will be available as little as 10 minutes before the train departs, reports The Guardian.

Rail users pay a premium for last minute tickets

Advance tickets are much cheaper than tickets bought on the day, but currently have to be bought by midnight on the day before travel.

This means that urgent train journeys can hit rail users hard in the pocket.

The savings from the move look to be huge – for example, the 20:00 train from Leicester to London St Pancras tonight would cost £59.50 if bought before departure.

But if you wanted to go tomorrow (and booked today), this same train would cost just £18.50 – at almost a 70% discount.

Seven other rail companies, represented by the Rail Delivery Group, have also signed up to the initiative.

These includes Northern, Greater Anglia, and Grand Central.

Jacqueline Starr, managing director of customer experience at the RDG, said: "Not everyone can plan journeys in advance and now more people can buy cheaper tickets on the day, even on their way to the station. We want customers to get the best possible deal whenever they travel."

I need to book a train journey up to the Lake District. I checked online and it will be £22.45 each way not too bad. That is with a senior railcard though which gives a third off.

The prices are exclusive offers so could change. It says prices can change.

Problem is I am waiting for a new debit card as I had problems with my present one when ordering a birthday present in reading the 3 digits on the back.

Going up 14th or 15th of this month. Its for my brother in laws 70th.

Are bookings by card only or do they do PayPal which would be ok?
