vanity Posted 27 October 2017 Posted 27 October 2017 http://footballia.net/matches/real-madrid-olympique-lyonnais (2009-2010Lyon draw in CL @ Real Madrid) Things I notice from the RM match: Lyon looks to be playing a 4-1-4-1, the team is very disciplined, the shape is easy to see when you know he likes to play a deep-lying MF just ahead of his backline. I expect we would see something similar from LCFC when going to Manchester City, Arsenal, etc. I expected a more precise passing team, but the team relied more on raw athleticism in the attack than I expected. Granted, this is against Real Madrid in Spain, very difficult to impose your style on them. Lyon definitely built from the back a fair bit, but I was surprised to see them take a number of shots with their keeper airing it out to their forward, especially bc he was usually bracketed by a pair of CBs. The fullbacks streaking down the wings were very athletic, but not terribly skilled on the ball. His forward doesn't press like ours do, he seems to prefer to use a pressing bank of midfielders as the primary obstacle in the other team's attack. It looks like his midfielders will press starting roughly around midfield, his forwards perhaps focusing on cutting off back-pass angles and obv being ready on the counterattack. Real Madrid looks the better team, no doubt, and should've won the game. Makes Lyon eliminating them on aggregate seems surprising. That said, while RM is getting shots, they aren't usually from dangerous areas, but seemingly from where Lyon wants them to take them. Lyon does a good job of staying in front of RM when RM is attacking, so there are not open players in the box. There were definitely missed shots by RM that were very good opportunities, but usually Lyon seemed very comfortable defending, especially the second half. I see quite a few attacks from the wing sending in crosses, fullbacks charging down the sideline and delivering a cross. Otherwise, the team seems to have a clear strategy inside the RM third, which would be a nice change. After the equalizer, he seems to park the bus as we see most everyone on Lyon in the back third. Lyon defends for most of the match, they concede a rather ordinary goal to Ronaldo very early, but their defense tightens up considerably after, they look very comfortable defending against RM, very drilled, well-prepared. A bit after 1:21:45, you see Puel shouting, so maybe he isn't always so quiet? Other links: Insane match between Lyon and Marseille, NINE goals, should shows Lyon's attack far better than the other matches: http://footballia.net/matches/olympique-lyonnais-olympique-de-marseille Link to Lyon losing 3-0 vs Bayern in the CL semi-final http://footballia.net/matches/olympique-lyonnais-bayern-munchen-champions-league Link to Lyon losing 4-2 at Barcelona (2008-2009, Puel's first season as coach, CL round of 16, they drew 1-1 at Lyon in the first leg): http://footballia.net/matches/fc-barcelona-olympique-lyonnais-champions-league -- that Barca team won it, IIRC. They were dynamic in the attack, but Lyon definitely had a number of quality opportunities they choked on. I mean shots from 10 feet away they were sending into the stands, stuff like that.
Stadt Posted 28 October 2017 Posted 28 October 2017 Decent analysis however I’d suggest that CL games aren’t the most representative of a manager’s coaching style.
SheppyFox Posted 28 October 2017 Posted 28 October 2017 He’s defnitely not always quiet, look at my roaring profile picture
mod hero Posted 28 October 2017 Posted 28 October 2017 Decent review, I would say style of football and formations have evolved quite a lot since those games though
