davieG Posted 20 October 2005 Posted 20 October 2005 So anyone who disagrees with you is an idiot now are they?India have the best rail infastructure in the world, yes, we "engineered" it, yes. Now who built it for next to no money at all and did all the back breaking jobs to actually build their rail system? India may have lots of natural resources and big industries, but they don't make huge money out of it, big business in the west does. The Indians yet again do all the back breaking work for low wages just for their resources to be shipped out for peanuts and make money for entrepeneurial(sp?) westerners. India has an absolutely shite road network, and out of the cities it's just like China, subsistance farming, but not because of Communism, but us. We only concentrated on the cities, leaving the rest of India isolated and unnable to link with the cities as they advanced ahead. Who built the railway in Britain for the ruling classes, thousands died here as well, how many died down the mines digging out coal for those same people and then had to trawl the slag heaps for a few bits to keep themselves warm, in fact who built anything anywhere. There is always a minority living off the backs of the majority it's happening now in every country in the world, even the so called socialist, every one is equal countries .A large proportion of companies in Britain are not British and profits are being made here and siphoned off abroad I'd wager that most of the clothes you're wearing have been made by people in 'poorer' countries, you wouldn't be using your pc if it wasn't for some poor bugger somewhere being paid peanuts. The thing is nothings changed, it just moves around and you have to judge it accordingly. No government in the world not the USA, not China, not India, not Britain turns down the opportunity of work no matter how poorly it pays, even then the wages have to viewed in context, they may get peanuts in India but then it only costs £10 to supply water to a house. My brother worked in Zambia for a while and vowed he would always treat the local population with respect. But he was virtual forced to take on a house boy, the idea of which he hated by the local establishment and was only aloud to pay him with a bag of corn and when he offered more it was considered an insult, so things aren't always what they seem are they.

India wouldn't have a great railway infrastructure if it was for colonisation! Do you know how big an area the Sub-Continent is yes thats why they call it a Sub-Continent because is it huge, it's 15 times the size of the UK ffs. India along with China,Russia,Brazil and possibly Canada are like no other countries on earth when it comes to population and land mass. None of these countries have an extensive road network to speak of so who are you going to blame for that? Australia, huge country no road network to speak of! Anyway the poverty in India is not reserved for the towns and villages that are isolated, i've spent time in Bombay, it is probably most severe there and in many of the larger cities. Here endeth todays lesson

Here endeth todays lesson And? How can you compare Canada's population with that of Brazil, Russia and China?! I never said anything about extensive road networks, why would a country that big want roads everywhere? I was on about the quality of roads Of course there is poverty in the cities, but I thought considering you were saying how I thought that all Indians were peasants, you were giving a very strong impression that people in India are all merchant bankers or something, so I just kept it to the villages of India where even the biggest tool can realise that they don't live the high life there[/inchorency]

It's pretty immoral to go into another country and try and tell them how to do things, to build stuff for them as if your doing them a favour, to take resources etc...

You really need to pay more attention at School, did that sound patronising, good it was meant to! You need to widen your horizons! Go find out the good things the British done whilst in India. There are a great many Indians who are proud of their ancestors association with the British. While your at it read about the Indian Caste system this will undoubtedly answer many of your questions

On the other hand if you mean they are in a poor state now well they've had nearly 60 years to improve them.
CasinoGee Posted 20 October 2005 Posted 20 October 2005 we exploited them to build the excellent railwayOoo those poor englishmen, slaving away with their pencils! Of course the English did some good in India, they had to live there, they didn't want loads of crap around them, so they just cleared up what suited them. But look at India, it's plain to see that something went wrong somewhere along the line and it's absurd that people should think it wasn't anything to do with the English.

CasinoGee Posted 20 October 2005 Posted 20 October 2005 Well no its not really actually Why not? I live in a society where money is everything, we've got no prominant left wing parties and I find it very hard to find any specific cultural aspects of our country. It's all pretty depressing, but the worst bit is I can barely think of anywhere else I'd rather live

This generation have as good a chance than ever to make this country great and have some identity. I am actually proud to be English, theres actually a lot of things to be proud of. Im not exactly old myself but the attitude of a lot of youngsters distresses me, they are so cynical and negative about practically everything.

I didn't choose to be white, I didn't choose to be English so I don't see why I should be proud. Thankful at most, if you like to be white and English, but not proud.
