He is one of the Filbert St Legends in my opinion!

davieG Posted 19 October 2005 Posted 19 October 2005 come on without , come on within , YOU AINT SEEN NOTHING LIKE THE MIGHTY FINN ! from of foxes & fossils Rantanen, Jari Juhani Born Helsinki, Finland, 31st December 1961 Career: HJK; Estoril; Beerschot VAV; HJK: 1986 IFK Goteburg; Aug. 1987 City; Dec 1988-loan Os Belenenses; July 1989 HJK; 1993 FinnPa: July 1996 HJK; 1997 FinnPa; 1998 PK-35 City debut v Crystal Palace (A) 12.9.87 A peripatetic international striker whose goal earned Finland a draw against England in 1985, and who had gained wide experience in Portuguese, Belgian and Swedish football, Jan joined City Con £50,000 after a week’s training ground trial, and despite the fact that Bryan Hamilton had never seen him play a senior game. He had been omitted from IFK’s UEFA Cup Final side despite heading their scoring list in the competition, and the move to England initially reinvigorated his career, with City fans soon overcoming their incredulity about the circumstances of his signing to hail ‘The Mighty Finn’. A handful of bustling, goal-scoring appearances also indicated that the hefty front man possessed a fair amount of vision and finesse on the ball, but an ankle injury and subsequent loss of confidence denied Jan the chance to develop his initially promising partnership with Mike Newell, which was never renewed again by David Pleat. The latter’s attempts to offload Jan were for a long time frustrated the terms of his work permit precluded sale or loan to another British club, while the demands of the player’s agent scuppered a proposed deal with Bundesliga club Koln. Jan had been out of first team action for almost a year prior to his unsuccessful trial spell in Lisbon, but continued to add caps to his tally throughout this unhappy period on Leicester’s books. The award of another year’s contract to Jari, after he had done much to keep the reserves in the top flight of the Central League in 1989, was soon revealed to be a method of ensuring City of a fee (C45,000 in fact) when he did indeed move on. Jari shared in HJK’s 1990 Finnish title win, but was sent off in the second leg of the championship play offs. In 19944, he suffered a fractured skull after colliding with a goalkeeper, but bounced back as a veteran to make a substitute appearance in HJK’s 1996 Finnish Cup triumph. His manager at FinnPa, Martti Kuusela, joked in 1997 that ‘the last time I saw Jari in this good shape was after the Second World War’; while Jari finally hung up his boots to join the FinnPa coaching staff in 1998. spirefox Posted 19 October 2005 Posted 19 October 2005 Scoring in consecutive home games in 1987 4-1 v Oldham & 4-0 v Plymouth made me think he was the new Frank Large.Another Pleat victim I recall.
Just_A_Guest Posted 20 October 2005 Author Posted 20 October 2005 Jari in Finnpa-shirt. Yeah I thought he did score against England and I was right. There was another Finn with your academies and I think played one senior game too: Tomi Petrescu. Then I think he returned to Finland. Had a fairly good season this year with FC Inter. Scored 7 goals (+ 3 assists) in 24 games.
