Internet / Phone Issue

If my internet is working does it automatically mean the phone line from the same socket/filter will work?

My hub is plugged into the filter and works fine but my phone is not able to send or receive calls, I guess it could be the phone but don't want to buy a new one unless I'm sure.

Any advice welcomed.

Contact the company who you pay line rental to. I’m guessing there will be a fault on the line.

edit: plug your phone in to another socket somewhere like next door see if the phone itself is broken....

Have you tried switching it on and off?

Hadn't thought of that, how do you switch a phone off? :dunno::P

Broadband and phone line use the same 2 wires from your house to the street cabinet, where it splits into copper wire (phone) and fibre (internet) back to the exchange. Fault could be with your phone or master socket in your house, or the link from street cabinet to exchange, or exchange itself.

If your with BT you can do a line test from their website and book Openreach to come out if necessary.

Currently with Sky having moved from BT to Virgin and the Sky to keep my costs down.

Sky use the BT / Openreach network. Maybe Sky have their own online test, or their customer services can do it. I had a fault on my line a few years ago that caused interference on a phone call and reduced internet speed. The cable from my house to the street cabinet was damaged, but in that case as both internet and phone use the same pair of wires, they both had faults.

If I had this problem and no spare phone to try in the socket, I'd borrow a neighbour's phone and try another filter. If that didn't work, I'd then remove the socket from the wall to check for ingress of moisture or build up of dust, and check for any signs of a poor contact between the input wires and their connector. Phones get their power from the socket, whereas modems/routers are powered from adaptors, so a poor contact would affect the phone more than the modem/router.

Had a word with Sky they’ve offered to send a BT engineer on Monday in the meantime it’s now working. I guess they did something their end.

Seems my phone was ok.

Sounds like they accidentally stopped your phone service. If its working after speaking with them its doubtful a cable or phone fault, unless its a co-incidence. They will be able to disable or enable your services remotely at the exchange. They've probably raised a job with Openreach to cover themselves though. Moisture and damp can get into cables and connections under the street or in street cabinets, they will be able to test the quality of the line.
