urban fox Posted 20 July 2021 Posted 20 July 2021 silly question, but what are the rules regarding the timings of naming the PL squad ? The reason i ask is that the season starts 14 August but the transfer window does not close until 31st. I presume that the 25 man (plus u21) will not need to be confirmed to the PL until after the window closes as many clubs, including ourselves, will likely still have business to do. As it stands, if we sign another CB (Kabak?) and a RW we will have more than the permitted 25 on the books unless there are some outgoings too. It may well be that either we would want to move on Choudhary, Amartey and possibly one of Perez or Praet (as well as Ghezzal) to make way for the incomings, or the players themselves might wish to move on but with the exception of the latter, and a couple of u23s, there seems to be little in the way of movement in that direction.

GK:Schmeichel, Ward, Jak Defence: Pereira, Castagne, Soyuncu, Evans, Justin, Bertrand, Amartey Midfield: Tielemans, Ndidi, Mendy, Choudhury, Maddison, Praet, Soumare, KDH, Albeignton Attack: Perez, Kelechi, Daka, Barnes, Vardy, Sowah. That's 25, assuming no one else leaves (also assuming I'm not forgetting anyone). However it's possible people like Sowah also don't have to be registered, as I'm not sure when the cut off date is for U21s.
Popular Post jeffschlupp Posted 20 July 2021 Popular Post Posted 20 July 2021 (edited) I wrote something similar to this last year so I've updated: The rules in brief for those that aren't familiar: - PL: teams can name up to 25 senior players in their squad, that is anyone born before 2000 for 2021-22. Clubs can then name limitless 'U21' players (i.e. born in 2000 or later) on the 'B list'. The only restrictions on the 25 senior players are that a maximum of 17 can be non-home grown. For the Premier League, home grown means any player contracted to an English/Welsh FA club for a period of at least three years between the ages of 16-21. - UEL: teams can name up to 25 players in their squad. Teams can name a maximum of 17 non-home grown players. At least a further four players must be association-trained - this is the same definition as the Premier League's home-grown rule. The last four players must be club-trained - i.e. spent 3+ years in Leicester's academy between the ages of 16 and 21. If the club do not have enough players who fit this bill, they cannot name a full 25 man squad i.e. if City name only Barnes and Dewsbury-Hall, we are capped to 23 players. Anyone U21 and 'club-trained' e.g. Thomas and Sowah, can be named on the unlimited B List which is separate to the main 25 man squad. The squad: GK 1. Schmeichel (AT) GK 2. Ward (AT) GK 3. Jakupović CB 4. Evans (AT) CB 5. Söyüncü CB 6. Fofana CB 7. Amartey/new signing FB 8. Ricardo FB 9. Castagne FB 10. Justin (AT) FB 11. Bertrand (AT) MF 12. Ndidi MF 13. Mendy MF 14. Soumaré MF 15. Tielemans MF 16. Dewsbury-Hall (CT) MF 17. Maddison (AT) WI 18. New signing/Praet WI. 19. Pérez WI 20. Barnes (CT) WI 21. Albrighton (AT) FW 22. Vardy (AT) FW 23. Iheanacho (AT) FW 24. Daka B List: FB 1. Thomas WI 2. Sowah AT = association-trained CT = club-trained Now clearly we have enough association-trained players (9), but are two short on the club-trained list. For the Europa League, this likely means Justin misses out in the group stage. In the Premier League, everyone can be registered - there would be two spare slots given Fofana is still a B List player for the PL. Who misses out on the squad, and therefore leaves? The following players are over-21 and not club-trained, so will likely leave: - Filip Benković - Dan Amartey (may stay depending on signings) - Dennis Praet (may stay depending on signings) - Rachid Ghezzal - Josh Eppiah - George Hirst - Mitch Clark - Daniel Iversen In addition, the club has the following club-trained O21 players who could (unlikely) be kept around to fill either of the two 'free' EL spots: - Hamza Choudhury - Khanya Leshabela Who else is eligible for the B List? There are several players aside from Thomas and Sowah eligible for naming on the B list in both the Premier League and Europa League, the obvious candidates include: - Jakub Stolarczyk - Callum Wright (now eligible having spent 3+ years at the club) - Ben Nelson - Shane Flynn - Wanya Marcal - Tyrese Shade Edited 20 July 2021 by jeffschlupp 6 6

We can register everyone in the PL squad, no problem. The only reason I've put Praet or Amartey as potentially not being registered is in case we sign someone who likely will reduce their game time and push them to leave. 1
Popular Post jeffschlupp Posted 6 August 2021 Popular Post Posted 6 August 2021 I've seen my post referenced a few times so I thought I'd give it another update. Will do a full update around the end of the window when it becomes apparent who's in and who's out. I've also changed it to show the limits of the 23 man squad and that any additions would either require departures from the 23 seniors in bold, or players to be unregistered for the Europa League group stage campaign - that could be Fofana or Justin for example. As it stands I would imagine it is virtually impossible Fofana makes it back inside 4 months so he will not be registered and his place instead taken by a signing in his position. The rules in brief for those that aren't familiar: - PL: teams can name up to 25 senior players in their squad, that is anyone born before 2000 for 2021-22. Sowah AT = association-trained CT = club-trained Now clearly we have enough association-trained players (9), but are two short on the club-trained list. We are therefore capped at 23 as mentioned above. In the Premier League, everyone above can be registered - there would in fact be three spare slots given Fofana can be registered on the limitless B list - that gives some potential for flexibility. Who misses out on the squad, and therefore leaves? The following players are over-21 and not club-trained, so will likely leave: - Filip Benković or Dan Amartey (either may stay or both could go depending on a signing in this position) - Dennis Praet (looks likely to miss out on a squad place) - Rachid Ghezzal - Mitch Clark In addition, the club has the following club-trained O21 players who could (unlikely) be kept around to fill either of the two 'free' EL spots: - Hamza Choudhury - Khanya Leshabela - Josh Eppiah Who else is eligible for the B List? There are several players aside from Thomas and Sowah eligible for naming on the B list in both the Premier League and Europa League, the obvious candidates include: - Ben Nelson - Jakub Stolarczyk - Shane Flynn - Wanya Marcal-Madivadua Who isn't eligible for the B list in the Europa League? Vontae Daley-Campbell and Thanawat Suengchitthawon are among several U23s players that despite being U21, would not qualify to be registered on the UEL B List because they have not been at the club for 3+ years before turning 21. 2 3
Popular Post jeffschlupp Posted 26 August 2021 Popular Post Posted 26 August 2021 Another update to look at the state of play in the final five-and-a-half days of the window. I'll skip the rules out this time, along with all mention of U23s who are highly unlikely to be involved. The UEFA Europa League squad, capped to 23 players: GK 1. Schmeichel (AT) GK 2. Ward (AT) GK 3. Jakupović CB 4. Evans (AT) CB 5. Söyüncü CB 6. Vestergaard CB 7. Amartey FB 8. Ricardo FB 9. Castagne FB 10. Justin (AT) FB 11. Bertrand (AT) MF 12. Ndidi MF 13. Mendy MF 14. Soumaré MF 15. Tielemans MF 16. Dewsbury-Hall (CT) MF 17. Maddison (AT) WI 18. Pérez WI 19. Barnes (CT) WI 20. Albrighton (AT) FW 21. Vardy (AT) FW 22. Iheanacho (AT) FW 23. Daka B List: FB 1. Thomas Unregistered: DF 1. Fofana AT = association-trained - 9 CT = club-trained - 2 In the Premier League, everyone above can be registered. Fofana can be registered on the limitless B List in the Premier League, in the highly unlikely case he makes a stunning early return. We therefore currently have two spare slots in the Premier League squad assuming Choudhury, Benković and Praet depart. Which first team players miss out on the squad, and therefore leave? The following players are over-21 and not club-trained, so will likely leave: - Filip Benković - Dennis Praet In addition, the club has the following club-trained O21 players who could (unlikely) be kept around to fill either of the two 'free' EL spots: - Hamza Choudhury What does this mean for our transfer activity? - I think Benković and Praet are near guarantees to leave, both probably on loan. - If the club want to sign anyone else and register them for the UEL, they would have to let one of the 23 listed in bold go, or not register them instead - Justin's targeted return in October makes it seem like he'll be involved. - That means that my big question mark is Mendy - who Rodgers has hardly mentioned of late, although pictured in full training last week. He is off to AFCON in January with Senegal, so keeping Choudhury and letting Mendy go makes sense on a number of levels. - Benković, Praet and Mendy out, Choudhury stays, a winger in? 4 4
An Sionnach Posted 26 August 2021 Posted 26 August 2021 I see no problems with Benko's transfer . He is not a big earner and is plenty good enough for a Championship side. His injury problems seem behind him. A fee of 3 million seems about right. His career is stagnating so he needs to leave now.
