Almost feels like the end of a massive “what could of been” era. 2 seasons in a row we looked destined to finish in the top 4 but we’ve been crippled by the COVID break & injuries.

These last couple of seasons we’ve arguably had our most talented group of players but we’ve just not been able to get them all on the pitch together to see what we could of achieved and where we could of gone.

Players are now starting to run down their contracts, our older, more experienced pros are getting older, our manager is on the ropes and our big talents will be off.

Just feels like we’ll always look back at this period (whilst it has still been successful) but always wonder “what could of been”.

I’m an optimist by FT standards, but I perceived two “sliding doors” moments.

Three selfish players suspended for WHU after breaking COVID protocols to party.  A pivotal game we then lost by a goal.  Three points gone which would have put us in the CL.  Then the foul which cost us a season of Little Wes, an indispensable player.  Even as those events went down, I saw the club’s trajectory changing.  Events since have only reinforced that feeling.

We agree a player like Tielemans wants to find a club to play Champions League football.  Flying through most of last season, he would have been confident he could achieve it here.  And then.  What would he -- a consummate professional -- have made of that escapade that cost the club that CL spot?

What would he think about the commitment of three of his fellow players to do even the minimum to reach that level?  About a non-playing captain -- only on the payroll to school the youngsters in the club ethos -- welcomed back into the club with a wink and a nod?  Maybe that some things at LCFC fall short of his standards.

Things will improve when JJ and Little Wes get back up to speed.  But yes, there’s going to be some tearing down to build back up.

With recruitment I think we need to have in mind a system we want to play and stick to it, whether that be a back 4 or a back 3 system and get players in who are specialists in that position. We need a real identity of how we want to play and get players in who can play it. None of this over complicated switching systems every weeks.

All the top teams have a system that they generally stick to. Even Liverpool with their injury problems last year stuck with the same formation and just interchanged palyers even if they were of lesser ability.

Agree re little Wes. I think our defence is a shambles (well, in fact I don’t THINK it, it IS… look at the goals conceded) and that losing Fofana has put us back a season actually. I can’t see us doing anything this season with this defence.

Disgraceful that we are compromised coz a 20 yearold breaks a leg.  The talent must be paper thin.

Perhaps Rodgers team selection and formations are a bit like Eric Morcambe's piano playing claims,

'I'm playing all the right defenders, but not necessarily in the right order'.

I agree. I think it’s based on two things. Fofana is an exceptional player AND the alternatives are bang average. I think it’s massively impacted our season.
