joeturner77 Posted 22 November 2005 Posted 22 November 2005 Hi, I am researching the development of new sports stadiums for a university dissertation and I’m focussing among others on the Walkers. I was wondering what fans thought of the stadium? Does it have a good atmosphere? Is there a lot of ‘local pride’ associated with it? Do you get the same sense of belonging as at Filbert Street? Are tickets cheaper or more expensive? Is there discontent about the debt caused by the stadium? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.
Libertine Posted 22 November 2005 Posted 22 November 2005 It's a top class stadium with brilliant facilities. But the atmosphere is abysmal. Whether that's down to the fans not singing enough or the accoustics of the stadium I don't know.
Ultra Posted 22 November 2005 Posted 22 November 2005 1) Only when it's full, which isn't often these days. 2) Definitely. 3) Personally yes, but having been a regular in the old Kop at Filbert Street I can see why others might take a different view. 4) More expensive, though this is a general issue which has nothing to do with the ground move. 5) The debt wasn't down to the stadium move, more to players being given expensive contracts which could have only been maintained if we'd got into the Champions League. Instead we got relegated and with the problems at ITV Digital, administration was inevitable. If the board had built the Stadium while Martin O'Neill was here, we wouldn't have had the financial and other problems we have now!

When it's full and the fans sing there is a brilliant atmosphere. I am proud of us having such a great stadium but i think most fans still remember Filbert Street with a smile and as soon as they think of Walkers... But not me. It's a billiant stadium. I'm not really sure how prices compare to other teams but yes, footy can get expensive. Can't remember prices at Filbert Street. The stadium wasn't the reason for debt but it obviously didn't help. We got relegated, ITV digital stuff and i think footy was going through problems at the time. It all added up to create the mess we were in.

I was wondering what fans thought of the stadium?Does it have a good atmosphere? - Not with our perfomances Is there a lot of 'local pride' associated with it? - Can't say I'm particularly proud, it's an ok replica stadium and for me the frontage reminds me of some outdated 70's office block. Do you get the same sense of belonging as at Filbert Street? - No Are tickets cheaper or more expensive? - Individually more expensive, but the problem is not cost it's value. Is there discontent about the debt caused by the stadium? - Not from me, any discontent re debt and administration is down to: debt = Peter Taylor / John Elsom and administration = Denis Wise & Eric Hall Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.
john_lcfc Posted 22 November 2005 Posted 22 November 2005 you were my filbo ooo ooo my only filbo you made me happy when skies were grey you never noticed how much i loved you how could you take my filbo away lalalalala oo ooo we want our filbo back we want our filbo back we want our filbo back mate the atmosphere aint the same in a new stadium. it looks half full even though theres more people at most games than you could have got into filbo. the ground has less character than a cereal bowl unlike charming filbo which we grew to love.. i want filbo back.. on the plus side the facilities are better
Ricey Posted 22 November 2005 Posted 22 November 2005 It doesn't have the same character as Filbert Street, it just feels like a neutral stadium at times.
Scarby Posted 22 November 2005 Posted 22 November 2005 give me filbo back any day!! i miss the bike shed, the score board that didnt work and when it did missed out letters!!! i miss the caling stand i miss standing in the corner of kop and having a sore thoat for the whole weekend from singing.
Jon the Hat Posted 22 November 2005 Posted 22 November 2005 We don't have any debt on the stadium, as we don't own the stadium....
Guest Posted 23 November 2005 Posted 23 November 2005 Fantastic facilites but the stadium is just an identikit one that is too similar to most new grounds these days. Atmosphere is non-existent, but I would say that it is down to on-field performances (or lack of, to be more accurate) than the stadium. It is not Filbo. You were right on the pitch, it felt, it felt crammed but it lead to some great atmosphere's over the years. It had it's quirks, the Executive boxes over the North Stand that looked like a motorway services bridge, the dodgy scoreboard, the East Stand. What Filbert Street had was character, the WS has none. A bit like the team. I feel proud we have a stadium and facilities that are apparently highly regarded, but if you offered me the chance to go back to SK1 I would. Belonging? With the empty seats around me, I doubt it!
trueblue_j Posted 23 November 2005 Posted 23 November 2005 the walkers stadium is a top class stadium but the atmosphere is abymysal we really need to get behind the team and sing chant and even if were loosing just like the leeds fans they got behind the team on saturday and look what happenend they ended up winning 4-3
Katy Posted 23 November 2005 Posted 23 November 2005 Facilities - very good. Atmosphere - Terrible - could be down to the clinicalness of the place or shit performances or both. Pricing - More expensive - no value for money due to current position Filbert Street v The Walkers - FS was home, was unique, was intimidating for the opposition - WS doesnt feel like home (see atmos above) opposing fans taking the piss, concrete and plastic bowl with no heart. Debt - Was down to the admin and manager before last and a dickhead 'player' and his dickhead of an agent If I could rebuild Filbo brick for brick and it be exactly like it was before it was cruely knocked down then I would - with my bare hands!!!! Good luck with this Joe, I hope we have given you some material to work on
joeturner77 Posted 24 November 2005 Author Posted 24 November 2005 Thanks everyone for your comments - greatly appreciated. Good luck with the rest of the season!
