My mum and Dad had solar a few years ago, just to heat the water. When they both passed away it was a pig to sell the house as i didn't know who installed it and buyers Mortgage providers were really picky on it.

I know it's imperative to save all of the solar paperwork, when we sold our last house the solicitors wanted all if it and details of the payments we received. A bit like planning permission for anything you've had done or UPVC certificates. Obviously, not to your fault Paul and difficult if it's not your house but, a note if you've had them installed yourself.

The panels and battery were installed yesterday. So far today we've generated 1.7kWh, not bad as it's very grey and cloudy. The battery filled up at 7p overnight, now discharging and currently at 75%, so hopefully lasts until 23:30 before it refills.

Our monthly electric bill starts on 5th of each month so, by 5th Dec I should have a good idea on savings (and given that I was charged £80 for October, when I was only at home for 5 days, it better be good).

I'm now adding a saving for the 'fire safety equipment'. They put a £20 smoke alarm in the garage, said we didn't need the linked kit for the house. So, I'm deducting that from the bill. It was a £50 kit at best, the cheeky f@ckers!

what supplier and tariff are you on? i've just had a tesla powerwall battery added to my solar set up so looking to get a more beneficial tariff but its a minefield

We're with Octopus, on their EV Intelligent Go tarrif. .24p during the day and 0.07p 23.30 - 05.30. Will be looking to add their .15p export tariff once we get all of our paperwork.

Today has been the only day the battery hasn't run the house all day. The boiler stopped working overnight, perfect day for that, and we've been using electric heaters. So, used all the battery charge by 17.30. We did surprisingly generate 1.4kwh from the panels but had to spend £2 on grid electric!!

my problem was i don't have a smart meter or an EV so was limited to tariffs. after i posted joined e.on on a flexible tariff to get a smart meter and then will move to their EV tariff as with them you don't need an EV, just storage, e.on also have longer off peak as well. not a clue what's going on with my export though now, was going to ecotricity but no idea now, but at least they are a british company despite dale vince being a bell

Does anyone know if a mains connection is needed to install solar panels. I'm thinking of getting an EV next year, but because my garage/parking is separate from my house, it will be difficult to have a home-charging socket from the house supply. So, I'm wondering if it would be possible to install solar panels on the (south-facing) pitched roof of the garage, with a battery to provide a source for charging. However, the garage does not have mains supply, and it's impossible to connect a supply. Any ideas/thoughts?

Yes. How far is the garage from the mains supply?

Batteries aren't suitable for discharging into cars. Most home batteries are are 4-8 kWh and they'll only discharge to 20%, plus discharging so quickly and frequently knackers them. EV batteries are usually > 50 kWh so it barely makes a dent.

I don't think I've explicitly mentioned it on here but our family business are electrical contractors and we install solar panels, batteries and EV chargers.

Probably should have mentioned it but we offer a £500 referral fee too, if you know somebody interested in solar panels, you refer them and they choose us we'll pay you £500.

Thanks for the advice. The garage is about 15 metres from the back of my house - closest connection point - but to connect I’d have to go across public space so that’s not going to happen.

Utterly stupid because the house was new when we moved in a few years ago, and I could probably have had a socket installed then.

Back to the drawing board.

Octopus have just emailed me with a variety of offers, one of which included solar and battery systems, with a 0% finance deal. Which, I recall people discussing finance options aren't really viable, the cost outweighing any saving, it might be of interest if it's 0%.
