His slow build up killed us. Especially in the second half. The amount of times the team decided to play backwards when we had beaten their press was maddening.

The likes of Vestergaard and Winks seem to only want to play in the way that showcases their talent of standing on the ball and passing it 5 yards. We'll not score many goals this season when the aim is apparently to keep a 95% or higher pass accuracy stat.

How many times did Winks pop the ball in behind Torp and Grimes? It just doesn't happen with him and that style of play makes us easy to defend against. We're much better when we get our wingers running at the opposition in space. Our best players are at their best when we are chaotic but Winks doesn't allow that to happen.

But that's not his job, he's there to mop up, police the centre of the park and free up those around him with vision in tight spaces, which he's very good at. The issue is him having had to do this while sharing a pitch with one or both of Soumare and Skipp, who offer zero dynamism and range passing which you need for Winks' role to be effective. Ndidi was similar, albeit far better at his defensive duties - his terrible passing being the prime reason he never got a 'big move'. You have to go back to Harry's partnership with KDH for an example of a midfield partner who had the skillset to compliment him, and the result was one of the best midfield partnerships the second tier has ever seen.

It's telling that he's looking far more comfortable on the pitch with James there, who actually has a box-to-box football brain. As for Vesty, he's got more vision in his passing than most other players we have, which is why he plays despite his pace limitations. Picked out Abdul and Stephy plenty of times on Saturday.

The way Mavadidi is playing currently, it's like having Jeff Schupp back!

Extremely frustrating game today.

Overall, I thought they were there for the taking. I thought we were comfortable, and looked sharp in possession and there were some passages of nice play. They barely laid a glove on us other than a couple of half chances. The biggest issue up until the changes was Ayew, he simply can’t play in these kind of games, especially not as a striker. No one was occupying those Coventry defenders today, they were allowed to just strike the ball around nonchalantly without any pressure.

Ayew was dropping far too deep, and we had nothing to work with through the middle other than James, who I thought was excellent today, and exactly what we’ve been missing…

Then came the clanger, Marti’s subs. They were diabolical, completely killed any forward momentum.

At that point Coventry were at their most vulnerable for me, we were getting balls in behind, and we were starting to break through their midfield. He then takes off James, who has been the best player on the pitch for me, and doesn’t bring on Daka? When you’re starting to really stretch that back line. It completely handed the game to Coventry, and it became very comfortably for them. We took away any of the energy in the middle of the pitch and then just had Ayew slowing the game down again as usual and there was no momentum at all towards the final ten minutes or so.

Having said all of that, the performance was more together. The defence was much better and looked fairly untroubled bar one or two half chances.

Today came down to poor decisions from Marti, it’s the first time I have thought that he got it wrong, because in my opinion they were there for the taking, I wasn’t impressed with them at all and some better calls from Marti, we would have won that game.

He’s got to play James and Winks together, and he’s got to drop Ayew and try something else, even if it’s Bobby in that position or as part of a midfield three. And look to play Daka from the off so we can occupy defenders more.

You’re never ever going to score goals when you’ve got Ayew stood in his own half scrapping for balls.

So overall, not happy with today, not because we were poor, more because we should have won that if it wasn’t for some poor decisions from the manager.

Edit for @Dahnsouff Mavididi was ****ing disgusting.

Excellent summary.

My observation from the stand and I saw this away at Oxford is that playing Vestergaard means we are set up to play rather deep. The gap between the defence and forwards looked stretched. For much of the first half against Cov we had no one in the box when in the attacking phase of the game. This set up helps Vestergaard and gives us defensive solidity but does help with the press.

Winks did attempt forward passes, but almost all of them didnt make it, were intercepted.  He isnt that type of player.  KDH we had for that last time we were down here, but he is gone now.
