Predicting the future of football: 'Premflix' and fans paying more - BBC Sport

I can tell you mine which I have been saying for years.  America want to rule the football world.  They want to take over as many clubs as possible and push the Club World Cup as the ultimate and most prestigious competition.  This will open the floodgates for MLS clubs to become amongst the biggest wealthiest clubs in the world.

I think football will go the same was as most culture in the internet age. An Americanised mush that retains very little national characteristics or differences save for whatever superficial 'fan culture' the producers want to highlight, served up in bite sized chunks to an audience whose attention span can't last past five minutes. There'll be huge, rich clubs, and there'll be no money non-league clubs, but nothing in between.

Been happening for years and years, sadly.

The entire language of football has changed to reflect a ghastly American version. I've been saying this for years - and had no end of people arguing that it's benign and I'm overreacting.

Have you noticed that the vernacular is shifting for the pitch - more and more it's the field now. The football field. Just another little knife.

One of the biggest wins is getting the NFL normalised and having English fans performatively acting American. There's been examples of English folks 'tailgating' in a desperate attempt to get the full trans-atlantic sports experience. Embarrassing.

I always find it fascinating that the English people perform being into American sports. It's never any other countries, is it? Nobody is getting into kabaddi.

In the age of the Internet and mass media it's inevitable English speaking countries will to some extent start speaking and thinking American. I don't think it's even that deliberate or conscious.

People think I'm joking when I say we should make the language of Britain Welsh again...

I'd disagree, Bovril.

People are making a conscious choice to copy it because they think it sounds cool. End of last school year there were some A-Level students in a local boozer going about what Minor and Majors they were going to do at Universities. They all must have known that's not what happens as they'd have had to applied. People just think it sounds cool. It gives them a thrill.

I remember when Brendan Rodgers as at Liverpool. One broadcaster picked up on the 'Quarterback' nonesense and instantly it was everywhere. Sadly, people want to sound American because it's the langauge of the media they consume. It's awful but inevitable.

It's not just football it's life in general we're coming up to Prom time.

Association football is the most popular sport for about 6% of the population, the MLS is never going to be massive - especially whilst they insist with franchises w/o promotion and relegation. I say this as somebody fairly MLS curious too.

Assoc. football would become the most popular sport in the US within 25 years if they actually had a proper pyramid, a huge part of the US interest in Wrexham is because it's their first taste of climbing up the divisions. There's millions and millions of people in the US without access to a local professional sorts team (hence the popularity of college football), if they could then follow Austin or Arizona up the ranks they'd become big clubs overnight.

There are talks of a pyramid starting in the states.  The MLS has shown how huge it could be if it played the european giants..massive interest.  There's absolutely no question that those in charge in the states want what I stated, its just a matter of time.

They already own about half of the top 50 clubs in the UK, plus lots of other clubs around Europe. They'll have the power and money to force through any votes on the game they want until they end up with a football version of the NFL.

Yep its no coincidence, there's a definitive plan for the next decade or so.
