Golf - decent set of new starter clubs

So I have decided to start playing golf again.  My son already is getting lessons off my dad and his own little half set which my Dad bought him and I want to start playing again myself now.

I used to have an old set of great white clubs that my dad gave me late 90's but they were chucked years ago.

I want to buy a set of new clubs (not bothered about second hand) and can see so many options for around £200

Does anyone have any suggestions ?

Can't go wrong with a set of Big Bertha irons from Callaway,very forgiving and can pick them up around the £100 mark on Ebay.

You probably want to add this to the golf thread in the "General Football and Sport" section so some of the guys in there can contribute, I know @Izzy @The Bear @spacemunky for example are regulars in the thread so popped them in for a recommendation.

 

In truth if you are just starting up again and unsure if you will keep it up, then what you have in the link is fine for cost and being a new set. They're not great, but they will do. Personally I'd go for 2nd hand clubs from a reputable brand like Callaway, TaylorMade, Ping, Mizuno, Titleist, Wilson, Srixon if I were starting out again. If you like the look of the club and you can have a hit in somewhere like American Golf or even better a range, then have a little go and see what you like. Some of the really old irons can be a lot heavier, so anything 2010 or later you can get your hands on second hand at a good price will stand you in good stead for a long while. I've played for 20 years and only ever had 2 sets of irons, Nike (discontinued obviously) and Mizuno. 

 

Longer term, I'd always recommend a fitting for taking golf more seriously, but its not needed for starting back up again. Albeit if you used to play off single figures, I'd probably say play with anything you can find free/2nd hand for 6-8 weeks whilst you get your eye in, save some money up and then go for a fitting.

As above I'd try and go for an older set by one of the major brands. Even if you have to go back 5-10 years they'll still be good enough for a simple "re-starter" set. You just need something reliable and with the most new tech you can afford in your budget. 

 

If you're against second hand then there are package sets out there by the likes of Costco and some other stores that would do you fine. If you search for package golf set on YouTube you should get some suggestions. A few major golf channels have done reviews on these sorts of deals.

Agreed with all of the above. My advice would be to consider your budget and if you have extra cash spend it on lessons, they will make more of a difference than the kit you use.

Other than my driver, my clubs are probably 30 years old 

 

I haven't been out once this year. Might be a lot to do with the fact that the guys I golfed with were also my drinking buddies.

This. The pro will probably slip in some advice regarding suitable clubs if you ask.
