Peterborough 2-1 Leicester City

Leicester City went down 2-1 to League One side Peterborough United in a friendly at London Road on Friday evening.

With neither side in action over the weekend the game came as an ideal opportunity for the Posh and the Foxes to keep their engines ticking over.

The fixture had been arranged to mark the lighting of Posh's new floodlights for the first time - and the home side would take the spoils on the night in front of a 695-strong crowd.

Assistant manager Alan Cork named no less than six internationals in his line up - including David Connolly, Danny Tiatto and Scot Gemmill.

Connolly was keen to impress after missing Monday night's Carling Cup clash against Preston North End - and he almost gave City the lead with a spectacular effort in the seventh minute. The Republic of Ireland international attempted an ambitious overhead kick from a James Scowcroft flick, but his effort landed just over the bar.

Connolly was clearly a man on a mission - and he came close again on the half hour mark. After some good interplay with Scowcroft the former West Ham man launched a powerful volley from the edge of the area - but his effort fell just wide of the target.

The Foxes were well on top and they took a well-deserved lead with 37 minutes on the clock. Jason Wilcox drilled in a low cross from the left and Matt Heath was on hand at the near post to side-foot the ball past Luke McShane in the Peterborough goal.

Peterborough's best effort of the first period came in stoppage time. Summer signing Leon Constantine fired off an effort from fully 30-yards, but his swerving shot landed just wide of Kevin Pressman's left hand upright.

City made five changes at half-time - bring on Conrad Logan, Jordan Stewart, Gareth Williams, Joey Gudjonsson and Chris Makin in place of Danny Tiatto, Lilian Nalis, Pressman, Wilcox and Scowcroft.

Peter Canero had come through 90 minutes for the reserves on Wednesday evening - but was showing no signs of fatigue in front of the sparse London Road crowd. Released on goal by Stewart in the 56th minute, the Scottish international looked certain to score until he was unceremoniously brought down by McShane on the edge of the area. Stewart put himself forward for the resulting free-kick - but his effort was hit straight at the Peterborough wall.

Aarran Butcher replaced Scot Gemmill with 69 minutes on the clock, and the young midfielder almost made an instant impact on the game. Stewart whipped the ball in from the left, but Butcher's well-timed header fell just over the bar.

Posh equalised against the run of play in the 70th minute. David Farrell picked up the ball on the edge of the City penalty area and hit a neat side-foot finish past the helpless Logan.

City almost regained the lead five minutes later. Substitute Makin tried his luck with a 25-yard thunderbolt, but his impressive strike landed just over.

But it was Posh who grabbed the winner in the last minute of the game - substitute Ryan Semple finding the target with a far post volley.

City: Pressman (Logan 46), Stearman, Elliott, Heath, Wilcox (Stewart 46), Nalis (Williams 46), Gemmill (Butcher 69), Connolly, Canero, Scowcroft (Gudjonsson 46), Tiatto (Makin 46).

Subs not used: Blake, Freeman.

Att: 695

It would seem to me that the only way to find whether the players are good enough is to let MA go. ;)

I know it's only a friendly, but to lose to Peterborough, who apparently have an injury crisis, is still concerning given the line up we put out.

No worries Benj :)

You was talking sence there for the first time! Joke :P

Losing to Peterborough is just imbarrassing! Our reputation (if we still have one) is going down the drain!!

I'm not particularly surprised by the result. We are a shambles, even without Micky there. Maybe the players thought to themselves that the manager ain't here, what does that say about his commitment, so why should we exert ourselves too much?? There appears to be an attitude problem in the squad, and although it isn't directly MA's fault, he could be doing something about it. In fact, he SHOULD be doing something about it - and not being there tonight doesn't help.

Again another sweeping judgement Anish.

What if he were at an under 21 game looking at bringing some good quality (admittedly not home grown) talent to the club?

I'm not saying he was, but you've once more condemned the man without knowing exactly what has gone on.

Get me the proof that he couldn't be arsed to be there and I'll be the first to agree that you are right.

I'm NOT saying MA couldn't be arsed to go to the game - I'm saying that his absence might be perceived by the PLAYERS as showing a lack of commitment/interest, therefore they MAY have underperformed/couldn't be bothered to play properly. All I am saying is that MA is there to be our manager, and it APPEARS that he isn't acting as a manager when he misses our games.

(Note the caps - I am merely suggesting things, not claiming that it is solid fact).

Of all the things MA has been accused of, lack of commitment must be about the most laughable. What will the lynch mob think of next?

Well im sure MA wouldn't have just not been there without telling the players the reason why

If he is so committed what was he doing at half time of extra time in the Carling Cup v Preston?? Sitting in the dugout armed folded as usual. Didn't even come on the pitch to motivate the players, or give them tactical advice. That shows lack of commitment imo.
