Three Portsmouth footballers have been interviewed by police as part of an inquiry into an allegation of serious sexual assault on two women at a hotel.

Hampshire Police say two rooms at the Ibis Hotel in Portsmouth were sealed off for forensic examination on Sunday, in connection with the investigation.

The allegation was made by two women in their early 20s, police said.

Portsmouth Football Club has confirmed three players have spoken to the police and given witness statements.

Neither the football club or the police have named the players involved.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokeswoman said: "We have spoken to three players and they have given us witness statements and our inquiries are continuing."
