Louise Posted 11 May 2006 Posted 11 May 2006 This week we gave Fryatt special dispensation to play in Ian Roper's Testimonial at Walsall (although we only allowed him to play for 30 minutes). The game took place yesterday and Ian Roper's XI (with Fryatt) won 5-4, with Matty coming on as a sub when they were 4-2 down and getting a hat-trick. Relevant part of the match report: With the encounter finely poised, the first action of the second period saw Kelly attempt an acrobatic effort that didn't quite come off. Kelly then fired over after some good work out wide by Paul Jones.Mick Kearns' side went close when substitute, Paul Hall weaved his way towards goal only for Barras to stop his effort on the line. However, it wasn't long before they made it 4-2 as a defence-splitting ball by Hall picked out Angell who slotted home. It was at this point that wily boss Roper decided to unleash Matty Fryatt as it didn't take long for him to make his mark as he scored from close range after Jones' cross caused problems. After Dean Peer flashed an effort wide for Mick Kearns' team, the scores were level when Fryatt twisted and turned as he swept through the opposition defence like an aardvark through an ants nest before coolly guiding the ball home. With 15 minutes to go, Roper decided to introduce himself into the action in place of Richard Green and his first contribution was to head wide from a corner as he came up from the back. There were loud appeals for a penalty when Mick Evans' uncompromising challenge saw Rees fall to the ground but referee, Alan Wiley - who will be in charge of Saturday's FA Cup Final - was unimpressed and waved away 'Psycho' Rees' protests. As both sides went in search of the winner with time running out, Neil Tolson saw an effort blocked by Green as Roper completed the clearance before Fryatt completed his hat-trick with five minutes to go as he latched onto a weak header back to round Gayle and give the Ian Roper XI a 5-4 win. The People's Hero Posted 11 May 2006 Posted 11 May 2006 Like an aardvark through an ants' nest? That's brilliant. I had a pet aardvark once called Rickae!
Deathside Posted 11 May 2006 Posted 11 May 2006 DU DU DU DU, MAATTYY FRYATT, DU DU DU DU, MAATTYY FRYATT Yes Matt he's doing it even when the season's well and truly over! Or as the bloke who sits next to me sings: 'Dut dut da dut - What a shÃÂt song'
Thracian Posted 11 May 2006 Posted 11 May 2006 Sheer class and scoring for fun the lad. Mind you, I'm surprised someone's not said it's only a testimonial against makeshift opposition. Anyway how about predicting when Leicester's League team will next score five goals. We didn't manage it last season. I doubt we'll do it next season but I'll show my optimism/blind faith and say October.

Nationwider Posted 11 May 2006 Posted 11 May 2006 I dont think we've done it sinse we beat sunderland 5-2! You may be right there. That's 6 (Videprinter-style repeat: Six) seasons ago.
syston_fox Posted 11 May 2006 Posted 11 May 2006 Theres been a few 4-0 wins since then though..... Bradford, wimbledon and Leeds spring to mind and quite a few times when we've scored 4 in a victory. That elusive 5th goal just seems beyond us!
Jordan Posted 12 May 2006 Posted 12 May 2006 Hopefully there were no Premiership scouts at that game...
lookwhaticando Posted 12 May 2006 Posted 12 May 2006 Hopefully there were no Premiership scouts at that game... I'd be quite suprised to see premiership scouts at a testimonial match for a team well below the premiership (a testimonial for a Walsall player is hardly fertile hunting ground is it?) Afterall, he was only up against "makeshift opposition". (That one's for you, Thrac )
