Thracian Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 Most of us expected England to make it through the first group stage. The manner of doing so has been disappointing. I was worried that we didn't look a balanced, cohesive team going into the tournament and I am far more concerned now that we still don't seem to be improving towards that end. The squad selection didn't help and games so far have thrust forward more questions than answers especially with the injuries to Owen and Neville. Worse still I'm not sure Sven has the strength of character or the brains/imagination to put it all right. But we'll see! Perhaps with all his experience as a reported ladies man it's all going to be in the timing. Perhaps he's just enjoying the prolonged foreplay and is planning one late, devastating climax!. So far there doesn't seem and danger of his coming too soon.
Daggers Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 Let's give Lemon credit, he has actually predicted a few things that have happened. But it wasn't that hard to predict these in the first place. Is he Mother Shipton in disguiiiiiiiiise.... iiiiis he Mother Shipton in dis guise?

His record speaks for itself, even if he does have big downfalls. His record in the domestic game is excellent and for England he's been a relative success, that will be proved when McLaren takes over and we see just how easy it is to under-achieve as a footballing nation.
Thracian Posted 22 June 2006 Posted 22 June 2006 Sven does tend to be a lucky manager but if he gets "lucky" in Germany I'll reckon he was sired by a leprachaun.
breadandcheese Posted 22 June 2006 Posted 22 June 2006 I've always thought Sven to be one of the most over-rated managers in the history of the game. Quite an achievement. His record at Lazio - his only major dometic success at top level, came though his near bankruptcy of the club. He bought his way to the title. It is a bit like Chelsea failing to win honours with the money at their disposal. Sven is inept as a motivator, relying on the players to do it themselves. In that way he is similar to McClaren, who I believe a number of the Middlesbrough players said a similar things when they were struggling and managed to turn it around. Quite frankly, if England manage to do anything this tournament, it will be almost in spite of Sven. His constant pampering and indulgance of his favourites has produced a disjointed and undermotivated side, who still seem to think they are just about to turn it all around. This sounds like Leicester's season under Levein just gone. The stupid squad selection, has now shown how poor it is with Owen's injury. 4-5-1 is the cry, relying on a half-fit Rooney to be the man upfront by himself. Playing as a lone striker is damn hard work, so it is asking too much for Rooney to play a full 90 mins (+ extra time if necessary) at top level. If he is alongside a partner, then maybe, but to play 4-4-2 without Hargreaves (the ballwinner) is stupid against the better teams. We have been told since Sven started that he was building for the 2006 world cup, where our best group of players since 66 would be at the top of their game. We are now here and Sven chooses a stupid squad and doesn't seem to know how to get the best out of our players. My only hope is that the players have the strength and bottle to win this without Sven, but I fear when we play the likes of Holland, we will battle hard and have very little to show for it. Heaven help us if we are chasing a lead in the second half. Quite frankly, Sven has raped our national game of £4-5 million per year for the last 4 years. Rant over. I just got very annoyed when I saw Owen stretchered off knowing that we had all said he needed another striker.

It's a fair assessment, but I guarantee that Sven's record will be shown as a success compared to the next 2-4 years of England's international football. Mark my words.

Mark my words. Can't help feel that has something to do with Steve McClaren. Another uninspiring manager, who relies on the players to turn it on. Should have been O'Neill.
