dandannieldanok Posted 12 June 2006 Posted 12 June 2006 The US were a joke today, totally outclassed by the Czech pension party
Alexikokopops Posted 12 June 2006 Posted 12 June 2006 The USA are looking good value for money, wish I'd put a bet on them after their outstanding performance today.
BartonFox Posted 12 June 2006 Author Posted 12 June 2006 Well Bruce Arena cocked that up royally <_< First off playing 4-5-1 was suicidal and nullified 2 of their biggest threats. Claudio Reyna needs shooting as does Eddie Pope. How Pope allowed that lumbering mountain Koller to lose him in the 6 yard box was just schoolboy, then Reyna doesn't close down Rosicky, great strike mind, absolute belter. Demarcus Beasley wide right????? WTF??? Eddie Johnson should have been on from the start allowing Landon Donovan to run from midfield and bring in the wide players and the front 2. Absolute disaster from Arena I can't believe he made such an error. Still on the Sam's Army train as they can't be that bad again
nhfox Posted 12 June 2006 Posted 12 June 2006 It appeared to me that Donovan was playing a withdrawn striker role, so it looked like a 4-4-1-1. In my opinion, Donovan should be an attacking midfielder with Reyna playing as the holding midfielder. I would much rather have Johnson as the other striker, making runs off of McBride. I agree that playing Beasley on the right was a bad idea. He always wanted to make inside runs, making it difficult to get any width on the right. The problem is, who is going to play on the right wing? The USA has too many left wingers (Beasley, Convey, Lewis). Dempsey isn't really a winger and I'm not sure Wolff is an option. I wish someone like Steve Ralston was selected to make a better balance. For me, finding someone to play the right wing is the biggest problem. Onyewu was very disappointing. Partially responsible for the first goal and completely responsible for the second goal. A lot of things went wrong, but if they beat Italy on Saturday, they're right back in it. I'm definitely not off the bandwagon.

Pure madness on Arena's part, the one time Donovan ran at the Czech back four he got upended and Reyna and Beasley managed to cock up the resultant free kick. I agree that playing Beasley on the right was a bad idea. He always wanted to make inside runs, making it difficult to get any width on the right. The USA has too many left wingers (Beasley, Convey, Lewis). I wish Pat Noonan was selected to make a better balance. For me, finding someone to play the right wing is the biggest problem. DeMarcus was absymyl and even though he was played out of position he is a better player than that and he just hid for most of the game. He's a good player and he let himself down big style today. Onyewu was very dissappointing. Partially responsible for the first goal and completely responsible for the second goal. Disagree about Unyewu he went front post (for the first goal) to cut out the cross and Pope followed him before losing Koller. Pope didn't even have his hands or another part of his body on Koller so it was a free header 6 yards out As for the second goal the header wasn't great but it wasn't the worst, it went a good 20 yards and Reyna just ambled out to Rosicky then waved a leg in defence of the shot. Reyna should have been racing to shut him down and then I doubt Rosicky would have had so much composure in belting that home. A lot of things went wrong, but if they beat Italy on Saturday, they're right back in it. I'm definitely not off the bandwagon. Bruce Arena needs to go back to what they and he have done so well over the last 4 years, He has to include Clint Dempsey, John O'Brien and Eddie Johnson if they want to beat Italy.

Who do you think Arena should play in the midfield against Italy? My preference is to see Donovan and Reyna as the central midfielders with Beasley on the left wing. I'm not so sure about the right, perhaps Dempsey is worth a look. As for O'Brien, I'm not sure he can last 90 minutes.
Bert Posted 12 June 2006 Posted 12 June 2006 I was expecting big things from USA. The Czechs were really good though in all fairness.

Personally I'd line up like this - GK - Keller RB - Cherundolo LB - Lewis CB - Onyewu CB - Bocanegra RM - Dempsey LM - Beasley CM - Donovan CM - O,Brien CF - Johnson CF - McBride Pope and Reyna need hauling they really let the team down today with shocking decision making and it cost the States big time.
BartonFox Posted 12 June 2006 Author Posted 12 June 2006 I was expecting big things from USA. You weren't the only one <_< Huge let down, huge. The Czechs were really good though in all fairness. Didn't think they were really tested and although all 3 goals were well taken they were avoidable with basics and the States didn't do it today.

I completely agree with replacing Pope. Considering that Arena ripped into Donovan after the match, I wouldn't be surprised if Dempsey takes his spot.
Suffolk_fox Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 I can't see Team USA lasting beyond the 1st round of the Soccerball World Series, which is a shame as I would love to see them come up against Iran.... Though I am sure any ensuing defeat would also be claimed to be an Act of War, as was the recent suicides in Guantanamo Bay...
Katy Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 The Americans are just going to have to accept that they arent good at everything and on this occasion its the beautiful game of FOOTBALL (not soccer)
BartonFox Posted 13 June 2006 Author Posted 13 June 2006 The Americans are just going to have to accept that they arent good at everything and on this occasion its the beautiful game of FOOTBALL (not soccer) Most Americans and 99% of their dimwitted sports writers give zero respect to football let alone their own national team. In the build up to the World Cup they couldn't get their head around it is the biggest sporting event in the world so they tried to tarnish it by saying stadiums would be full of neo-nazi's sig hiel'ing and throwing bananas at black players. I kid you not, and one prominant black sports writer said he cancelled his trip to the World Cup because of these reports. That is why I want the USA to do well to stick it up the ignorant and ill informed morons that riducule their footballers. At least these guys can play a sport that doesn't need a suit of armour or it is a prerequisite to act like a gangster and use the race card at every opportunity or wear a glove the size of a Kenny Everett hand to catch a ball.

The American people tend to be pleasant enough, it is the country and the 'dumb down culture' that their government and news agencies etc promote that I detest. Frankly I couldn't give two hoots about the USA team doing well, as it would just give them something else to crow about. Let them stick to their netball, rounders and padded rugby.

Suffolk_fox Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 What are you talking about????? Who was talking about bigotry? I was getting my retaliation in first! I have seen too many people shoot posters down for having views that don't agree with their own.
