BartonFox Posted 28 May 2006 Posted 28 May 2006 Remember Greece in Portugal 2004? See USA in Germany 2006 for something similar. I'm on the Sam's Army gravy train and it's chugging all the way to the semi finals at least this time round. Clint Dempsey, Eddie Johnson, Brian McBride, Landon Donovan and DeMarcus Beasley, not media hyped fancydans just proper footballers who will put their bollux in the grinder for their team if it means victory. These guys play a sport that doesn't even get respect in their own country and that hurts them; they are coming to Germany to win over their own even before they worry about rest of the world. That is a very dangerous state of mind to come up against. "Bruce Arena's Star Spangled Army"

It is not a combat situation confused by the fog of war. This was a massacre," said John Sifton of Human Rights Watch. "If these allegations are borne out, and it looks like they will be, this will be the most serious war crime that has taken place in Iraq." Scum.
Knighton Matt Posted 28 May 2006 Posted 28 May 2006 I reckon the super Aussies might qualify for the 2nd round ahead of them...
Sigma Posted 28 May 2006 Posted 28 May 2006 The US are playing Latvia later today. They beat Venezula 2-0 a few days ago, and lost 1-0 to Morocco. I can't see the US making it as far as they did in WC 2002. I think a first round exit is in their future. 1 win, 1 loss, 1 tie and lose out on goal differential.
bigneville Posted 28 May 2006 Posted 28 May 2006 Did they not play a German side about 5 weeks ago and got hammered 4-1????
Lemon Harpic Posted 28 May 2006 Posted 28 May 2006 Was that any of the players faults? If "Bruce Arena's Star Spangled Army" use the World Cup to make a strong anti-war stand, perhaps by wearing "Stop Wars" T-Shirts like Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody wore in the Spitting Games video, or by booing their own national anthem, or by refusing to play at all, if they did anything like that then I'd have more respect for them. As it is, I hope that they go out as soon and as humiliatingly as possible.
Sigma Posted 28 May 2006 Posted 28 May 2006 Did they not play a German side about 5 weeks ago and got hammered 4-1???? Indeed they did.
Hitesh Posted 28 May 2006 Posted 28 May 2006 They are a side with good individuals but i dont think they are a good unit! Myabe they will get to the second round but no further!
Hitesh Posted 28 May 2006 Posted 28 May 2006 IRAN Surprising choice Cobbo, i would have though you would be loyal to Togo!
shen Posted 28 May 2006 Posted 28 May 2006 Surprising choice Cobbo, i would have though you would be loyal to Togo! Maybe he was just reminding BartonFox of the humiliating defeat the USA suffered against Iran in 1998

I'm sure they'll put in plenty of effort but the current squad simply isn't good enough to challenge seriously this time around. I can't see them getting past either Italy or the Czech Republic in their group.
Knighton Matt Posted 28 May 2006 Posted 28 May 2006 I reckon the super Aussies might qualify for the 2nd round ahead of them... surprised I got away with that they're only in different groups!!
Ultra Posted 28 May 2006 Posted 28 May 2006 I thought you meant that Australia would reach the knockout stages and the USA wouldn't. But I don't hold out too much hope for the Aussies either, I'm afraid. Brazil and Croatia will be too strong for them.
Finnegan Posted 29 May 2006 Posted 29 May 2006 Anyone who thinks the USA will beat the Czechs and the Azzuri is a bit dense, IMO. Won't make the second round, happy to make a cash bet with anyone here - I need the money, tbh. ;D
ThurmastonFox Posted 29 May 2006 Posted 29 May 2006 I think that one day the Americans may actually surprise us all. I mean, think about it. They have potentially the largest pool of talent to choose from in the world. So it would not be surprising to see them have a really strong squad. I think that it would only be fair if each of the states had to qualify then the qualifying states could submit players ROFL.

Manwell Pablo Posted 29 May 2006 Posted 29 May 2006 Well Barton even if you are very right and I am very wrong, and the yanks do somehow manage to get out of one of the hardest groups there are. 2nd place will see them playing Brazil in the second round... So I wont hold my breath for a Grecce like performance.
Milky Posted 29 May 2006 Posted 29 May 2006 i keep thinking brazil are going to fail miserably, i don't know why, i just do. They'll probably win it know. I can't see USA doing much this time round, but anything can happen i suppose.
shen Posted 30 May 2006 Posted 30 May 2006 Well Barton even if you are very right and I am very wrong, and the yanks do somehow manage to get out of one of the hardest groups there are. 2nd place will see them playing Brazil in the second round... So I wont hold my breath for a Grecce like performance. Brazil were a little fortunate to dispose of the Americans in '94, as were the Germans in '02. Having said that, I feel that the 'surprise years' of American football have gone. They're no longer an unknown quantity to the rest of the world, and they still lack players playing in the top leagues around Europe. They'll most probably perform admirably in the group stages, but they'll fall short against all 3 of their opponents
nhfox Posted 31 May 2006 Posted 31 May 2006 The group is wide open...Ghana just destroyed Jamaica and if I remember correctly, the US had a tough time with Jamaica during qualifying. I wouldn't be surprised if they finished last in the group, but I do believe they have the quality to finish first.
