Eng v SL run chase thread

30 for 0 chasing 325 to win. Would be a remarkable feat, a long, long way to go yet but the run rate won't be a problem.

I think a certain M Muralitharan might bowl a few overs today though.

Saturdays play has to go down as one of the most boring I've ever sat through ... a bit more like it today, considering the wicket. Wish I'd got a ticket while I was there now...

1445: WICKET 104-2 Cook 5

Cook's tortuous stay at the crease is ended when Muralitharan's doosra strikes him on the pad in front of the stumps. Koertzen's slow finger of death goes up and, having looked so secure just over 30 minutes ago, England are suddenly on the rack again.

1459: WICKET ENGLAND 111-3 Strauss 55

Muralitharan strikes again, finding the edge with some extra bounce and Koertzen's finger goes up quickly this time when Jayawardene takes the rebound after Sangakkara fails to hold on.

Just shows English spinners should stop trying to blame the wickets.

Murali, Shane Warne, Mushtaq Ahmed - all have had success here.

Although we haven't had anyone with that sort of talent since perhaps Derek Underwood (?), Monty is as good as we've had since then. (Got to back up my boy, Northants til I die).

Monty is a much better 'strike' spinner than Giles. I personally don't think Giles is a good enough bowler to warrant a place unless we really need a 'containing' bowler. Having said that, he's much the better batsman/fielder of the two.

In my view, neither are ideal, but we have to work with what we've got.

Anyone know how Jones is getting on with injuries?

1535: WICKET ENGLAND 125-6 Collingwood 9

A bizarre dismissal as Muralitharan's off-break keeps very low, Collingwood plays it off his own toe and it bounces up for short-leg to pounce again. A referral to the third umpire confirms that it's number six for Muralitharan and he must be odds-on to claim all 10 at this rate!

Lucky to hold now. :huh::cry:

I played on Saturday and have an amusing story about my mate's dismissal (I didn't even know we were playing his team - quite bizarre as I had a drink with him that morning!).

He came to the crease and took his guard about 8 inches out of his crease. Our skipper was bowling medium pace. I said to my mate Rob, 'I'm standing up for this bowler mate' (I was keeping wicket). Anyway, Rob clearly worried about being stumped moves well back in his crease. Expecting a slow delivery he takes his guard, my mate pushes the ball through a bit, Rob plays off his back foot and wipes out all three stumps with his bat. It was quite funny although I did get hit with a stump.
