Hullfox Posted 19 August 2006 Posted 19 August 2006 Heard him talking about his depression on Five Live this morning. Seems like it has been a real battle for him though he seems to have held things together better than many in his position.
Thracian Posted 19 August 2006 Posted 19 August 2006 Didn't hear it. What's he got to be depressed about?
Hullfox Posted 19 August 2006 Author Posted 19 August 2006 Didn't hear it. What's he got to be depressed about? Cheap comment that. For someone who is such a wordsmith normally I would have expected more understanding of the subject or at least an effort to. One in five adults will suffer from it at some stage in their lives. Hopefully, when it's someone closer to home you'll not ask them that question. For your info, many of the following causes can be experienced whether you are a highly paid footballer or jobless down and out. What causes depression? There are a number of reasons why people become depressed. These may include: reactions to life events and stresses, and genetic or biological factors. Early experiences in life and losses through bereavement or the break-up of a relationship may trigger episodes of depression, and perhaps mania. A number of physical illnesses are also linked with depression, such as infections like influenza, and disorders of the thyroid gland. Family studies suggest that manic depression in particular sometimes runs in families. There may be an abnormality in brain biochemistry involving a chemical messenger called serotonin.
DaveyJ Posted 20 August 2006 Posted 20 August 2006 I never knew before he suffered from depression. Its great to here that he's working through it.
SystonFox Posted 20 August 2006 Posted 20 August 2006 one friend at work is suffering from it and a close friend has been thru it and got thru it. not a nice thing hearing the details of how they feel.
Janx Posted 20 August 2006 Posted 20 August 2006 Didn't hear it. What's he got to be depressed about? Finally you have made yourself look a total cnut!

I just asked a simple question. I wish I'd listened to the programme now because apart from fielding a load of totally unwarranted flak, I've still no idea what's made him depressed. The problem with some of you guys is you obviously read things into sentences that simply don't exist. All I seem to have now is a medical dictionary definition of depression - which I could have looked up myself - but damn all about what Neil Lennon said about his depression. I suppose my first mistake was taking an interest in the thread. Furthermore, wordsmith or not, why would I be expected to know anything about a subject I've never had more than passing experience of? Do you know a lot about advanced physics or Mandarin Chinese? It's part of the reason I enquired.
C-man Posted 20 August 2006 Posted 20 August 2006 Finally you have made yourself look a total cnut! I don't think Thracian meant it in a malicious way! I understood it orginally as 'What is he depressed about?', and i'm sure that is what Thrace actually meant. Besides, what is this: pick on Thracian day?
Thracian Posted 20 August 2006 Posted 20 August 2006 That's exactly how it was meant. And Hullfox well knows it.
lookwhaticando Posted 20 August 2006 Posted 20 August 2006 Here's a large article about it in the Scotsman, for anyone interested Apparently it started right near the end of his Leicester career, in 2000. Not read it all yet, but will do soon.

He may of had a bit of depression in the past but I somehow think the nice big cheque from the Daily Record and his publishers will make him feel a lot happier!

I don't think that's entirely fair on Neil. He's got plenty of cash to be getting on with, I seriously doubt a large check from a publisher is going to fix his mental state. I mean, back in 2000 when it 'started' he was in demand, money wasn't exactly hard to come by at the time, yet he was hit by depression. If he was depressed then when he was doing what he loved and being paid a mint to do so, I don't think earning a bit more cash will fix it.

Listen once he's signed on the dotted line with a publisher his ass is grass as they say. He may not need the money but the publishers and their shareholders will want loads of it. This article has obviously been released to sell books simple as!

There's no disputing that perhaps the article was published in an attempt to boost sales of the book. A nice little preview. I read your comments as disputing that he had depression at all - which is what I was responding to. But yeah, I agree with the publisher-driven article theory. Happens all the time - Ashley Cole did it recently... said he planned to name/shame those who hung him out to dry bla bla bla... great bookselling ploy.
Hullfox Posted 20 August 2006 Author Posted 20 August 2006 That's exactly how it was meant. And Hullfox well knows it. No I didn't.
Guest Posted 21 August 2006 Posted 21 August 2006 No I didn't. Are your telepathic powers not working? Shame....
Thracian Posted 21 August 2006 Posted 21 August 2006 I don't think Hullfox needs you to hold his hand.
Janx Posted 21 August 2006 Posted 21 August 2006 Frankly this is backtracking and carpet burning under feet of the highest order... the semantics of "what has he got to be depressed about" shows an entire lack of sensitivity and for someone who is clearly more errodite and KNOWS that depression is an "illness" as apposed to a mere "state of mind", was stupid and thoughtless.. I would have had more respect if Thracian had merely come out in a quick sentence and said "sorry that was stupid and insensitive". I will say no more.

And you record things the opposite way because "what ha he got to be depressed about" actually had a question mark at the end!. If you'd have noticed the question mark perhaps you wouldn't have had such a problem. PS: Do you, Leesoh and Hullfox sit on the same row of the Kop or are you just part of the same pre-match drinking group? Cos this sounds suspiciously like an old pals support group.

I DO socialise with Lisa, but have never had the good fortune to meet Hullfox.. Again, you miss the point .... why do you THINK I personally would have such an issue rearding the misinterpretation of a subject on depression...hmmm lets think! Its not for you to know that I have suffered and continue to with this frigging illness and that isnt why I berate the attitude, but I still think you, especially, would have more "medical" awareness.

Your conspiracy theory holds no water, rather like your self defence on this issue.
golden gordon Posted 21 August 2006 Posted 21 August 2006 i'm not wasting any sympathy on overgrown pampered cry babies that can't handle the strains of "modern life" , and all the worries about what to spend all their excess cash on . i'll save my sympathy for genuine victims of hard times and tragedy grow up you big babies and pull yourself together and all you bleeding-heart liberals stop pandering to these spoilt brats

Your conspiracy theory holds no water, rather like your self defence on this issue. Well the Leesoh part seems plausible for a start. As for the original issue, think what you like. I don't suppose being wrong will bother you.
Babylon Posted 21 August 2006 Posted 21 August 2006 "Lennon is one of the few major sporting personalities to admit to an illness of a mental nature. Perhaps curiously, the last top footballer to go public about suffering depression was England international Stan Collymore who played alongside Lennon at Leicester City." What are they trying to say abut Leicester???? Ha ha

That's unfair. I thought it was a genuine enquiry and not an ignorant sneering John Gregory style put-down. I have suffered in the past from depression. It is not always a condition that can be easily explained to those who are not familiar with it. Neil Lennon has been fortunate enough to battle through it and lead a successful career, in his case as a footballer. There are many who do not enjoy such good fortune.
