WHat wine would you recommend (red and white) for a max price of £4.00, oh great whine sorry wine society????

Interestingly, supermarkets have identified £3.99 as being the price break for wine ~ in that people think they are paying for a good bottle and getting a good deal at that price. Consequently, many wines on discount to three ninety nine have previously been up at a falsely inflated price prior to being "reduced" to the price supermarkets planned to sell it at anyway. Many wine makers have been squeezed by this false strategy.

I remember the days when I used to be able to drink wine with an evening meal.

Then came the incident where my girlfriend got hideously drunk, and we needed a taxi to take her 200 yards up the road, and spent most of the night vomiting thanks to wine.

Now, even one glimpse of a bottle makes her all nice and ill. Stupid Women!

I would recommend however... is £4 really your budget? I try to spend £6 or above.

As DiscoBob points out, supermarkets overprice bad wines and then reduce them to £3.99 or 2 for £7.

Take a gamble. I like to pick wines with interesting labels.

In that price bracket, you can't go too far wrong with Hardy's stamp/Hardy's Crest, Blossom Hill, Lindemans, Kumala.

For better value for money, try to avoid French wines. Chilean, Australian (avoid the cheapest), South African, Argentinean, Bulgarian and other new world wines offer much better value in many cases.

What it comes down to is personal taste. Are you looking for something dry/medium? Is it for you? Are you actually bothered if it's nice? Is it for with a meal?
