Stuliasz Posted 15 October 2006 Posted 15 October 2006 The main reason he has gone missing in games in the past has been largely due to our long ball tactics. I'm sure his neck must really ache at the end of games watching the ball fly 50 yards above his head time and time again but when we do keep the ball down, he can be a very effective player as he showed yesterday. Keep it up Gareth!

Cat Burger Posted 15 October 2006 Posted 15 October 2006 I don't think passion has really been a problem, I loved it last year when he chased down the Crystal Palace defender and played the back heel through ball for the eventual goal. Some players just don't show their passion in the same way as say, Tiatto. Williams brings other qualities to the team, we won't find a player with both, for instance Gerrard, in our position. The key is finding a player to complement him.
davieG Posted 15 October 2006 Posted 15 October 2006 The thing is getting him to play for 90 minutes and I don't mean in a passionate sense but being available, wanting the ball and not hiding. I sometimes think we should make him captain to see if that will wake him up. He had a good game yesterday but half dozen good games a season are just not enough especially from a guy with his ability. A truely wasted talent, he has the ability to play in the premier but not the mental attitude or application.

jan Posted 15 October 2006 Posted 15 October 2006 Williams is a class act, and he can show that if he got the right team around him. Hopefully he can continue that way.
Manwell Pablo Posted 15 October 2006 Posted 15 October 2006 Renew it now! We can't lose a creative mid like him. If we renew it now we probabley will lose a creative mid, he might go back to not being arsed.

No question but I forever wonder what he'd be like with really good footballers around him. Times you feel he looks up and there's no one screaming for an early ball. If there was, I am sure Williams could find it. He's never had that luxury at Leicester. Pity. Cos he could have.

It's funny how the right team around him seems to suddenly appear from nowhere when his contract is up for renewal, this is what happened at Forest, oh well at least we might get 6 months of application out of him.

Times you feel he looks up and there's no one screaming for an early ball. If there was, I am sure Williams could find it. He's never had that luxury at Leicester. Pity. Cos he could have. I don't disagree but on the other hand do you ever see him screaming for the ball, or inviting the back four to pass the ball to him. Part of the reason the back four hoof it is because the midfield aren't making themselves available - this is my main criticism of Williams. If he is making himself available, although I haven't seen it and they don't pass to him he should be giving them hell. This is also part of the reason the goalie, whoever he is hoofs it, because the back four do not attempt to find some space so the goalie can confidently pass a shorter ball to them. In fact does any of our team try to find space?
Thracian Posted 15 October 2006 Posted 15 October 2006 People have short memories. Play badly, drop Williams, play badly, drop Hughes, play badly, drop Williams. It could go on forever. Drop Johnson, play Hughes and Williams, concede more goals, bring back Johnson, score no goals. Play Kenton, no overlap when we have the ball down the right, play Stearman, stupid defensive errors and generally hoofing, drop Stearman. Play Johansson, no overlap when we have the ball down the left, drop Johansson, play Tiatto, general thuggery and pointless backpasses galore, etc etc etc. There is no golden solution to all of this but Hume as an attacking midfielder and/or 3-5-2 would play to our strengths and cover for our weaknesses in my opinion. You make pertinent points which emphasise why our team struggles to gel. Few of the natural partners quite fit. Take the left. Porter can play and support while Nils can defend he can't support. Stearman attacks but needs covering but only with Maybury did that happen but Maybury can't attack and neither can Kenton. Low can't cover and neither can Hughes really. Soon, with luck, we'll have Mattock and Porter on the left. On the right I still see 4-3-3 as being easiest to accommodate our players. Whatever, the balance needs to be found. Hume/Williams? We lose Hume's shooting.
Joe. Posted 15 October 2006 Posted 15 October 2006 Is this the same Williams everyone is raving about as the one last season? Yes I agree Williams had a great game yesterday but come on, last season he was pretty poor. He is usually very lazy and doesn't want the ball. I am very glad Williams may be starting to show what he can do but he isn't really a class act yet.

It is funny, but 6 months of application from him is better than no application from him at all And when it comes to renewing his contract, don't give him a long one - just a year max, and tell him if he doesn't perform well on a consistent basis, he will be let go, but if he plays well it'll be extended.. Surely that'd be incentive enough for him??

Let him go and put sylla in then! I think you'll find that most players due a contract renewal play better... Keith Gillespie???????
gatesheadfox Posted 16 October 2006 Posted 16 October 2006 he kept the ball on the floor, he actually got stuck in with challenges. the best thing about him on saturday was the fact he does not panick even when players run at him, he calmly looks round for the best option.

Spot on observation... LOOK up and choose your man........isnt that what every manager says!
Manwell Pablo Posted 16 October 2006 Posted 16 October 2006 Spot on observation... LOOK up and choose your man........isnt that what every manager says! No. I can think of quite a few that say, TWAT it up the field as hard as you can and hope the big fella heads it.
lcfc_jme Posted 16 October 2006 Posted 16 October 2006 No. I can think of quite a few that say, TWAT it up the field as hard as you can and hope the big fella heads it. Wouldn't happen to be a couple of our previous gaffers would it?? And McClaren wouldn't be involved in that either would he??
Katy Posted 16 October 2006 Posted 16 October 2006 We've obviously missed him. Beats Hughes hands down
Foxello Posted 16 October 2006 Posted 16 October 2006 When he is good, he is really good. Unfortunately, he is very inconsistant.
