Ipod - Clarification Please.

I've never used an ipod in my life, I'm posting regarding this because firstly I really like the new anodised coloured look of the nano... secondly though my girlfriend has been on at me to sort something out.

As we all know, an ipod is pretty much a hard drive with some fairly user friendly (I'm told) interface on there and of course a sound output. The problem my girlfriend has had is that she started using a laptop rather than a desktop. I'd set itunes up for her on her new laptop, as soon as she plugged her ipod in though, it wiped her ipod (as her itunes on the laptop was empty). Is there a setting where you can choose which way to transfer the music? That is to say could I plug an ipod with 5 albums on it in to a laptop with itunes but no library and have the music synchronise to reflect what is on the ipod, not what is on the itunes on the laptop?

I think I've worded that clumsily.

The thing is, those songs my girlfriend had on her ipod have now dissappeared in to the ether. To prevent it happening again I'm going to start backing it all up for her, but is there an easier way?

And you could have just PMed Jamesino..?

Free ipod.

All you have to do is spend 40 hours on sh it sites and then alienate everyone else you know convincing them to sign up for the same long term commitment, cr ap deals that you have!

Everyone is a winner.

There is a way of ensuring it doesnt wipe your music, when you plug in your ipod it will typically ask if you want to syncronise your ipod. Say NO, then go into the ipod configuration within itunes and opt to manually transfer music over rather than automatically.....

Hope this helps...

That's the badger. Thankyou.

Can I not just use it as a usb storage device anyway, that is to say, do not install itunes at all?

See I don't have this masterpiece with me now.

That's why I need a mp3 player.

With that track on it.

And some working headphones, naturally.

Sh it, just remembered, I'm death.

Do they do them with a braille output? Oh, hang on, that's for blind people isn't it.

*pokes eyes out*

Oh fu ck.

Hey Jimbo............Before you splash out on a Nano (2-8 gb) look at the iPods with a bigger hard drive, if ever you want to download podcasts, store videos or store "Lossless" files, you will run out of space in a hurry. The "Lossless" format means it has about the same bit rate as a wav file (CD size) so you will need space. If you are only going to listen through earbuds, mp3 (which is only about 10% of the original info) is good enough but to run them through your stereo you will loose a lot of audio information. An 8gb Nano costs $249 and the 80gb Ipod is $349 and well worth the extra cash IMO.

I got my new 30gb iPod yesterday, as I posted in a thread a few weeks ago my old one bust but got my new yesterday and TBH its much nicer (looks, feels, works much nicer) just found how to actually use it on my car stereo, and how to pick the songs/get song names up via the stereo display! Really Cool!
