The reason why I asked this question is the following:

I just bought a German book on the beginnings of filmmaking (a book no longer available, think I made a good deal there).

There's a couple of chapters on the first few inventors and the huge run for the first "cinématographe" at the end of the 19th century.

I picked Le Prince, because he was the arguably the first to have shot a public scene on film, at the Oakwood Grange Road in Roundhay, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England on October 14, 1888.

He also shot a scene on the Leeds Bridge later that month.

There's also a spooky story surrounding his death, as he suddenly disappeared without a trace in 1890, shortly before he was supposed to head to Paris to patent his camera (Edison later got most of the patents on film cameras, as you probably all know).

Just wanted to know whether people in Leeds are still familiar with that name (>Janx).

most people in Leeds seem to have enough trouble understanding the 24hr clock let alone obscure 19th century French Blokes

It's not a name I'd know off the top of my head (unlike the Lumiere brothers, obviously.) That said, I have a hunch I've seen Leeds Bridge; though it's hard to tell, as a lot of the early short about-town scenes look the same. S Porter and the Lumieres generally tend to hog a lot of the Silent credit, directors above inventors I suppose.
