davieG Posted 16 November 2006 Posted 16 November 2006 Spent £7mill and still only two pints more than us - a lesson there I think. From Sky Southampton chairman Michael Wilde admits George Burley will have to sell before he can buy in the January transfer window. Burley bolstered his Saints squad to the tune of £7 million during the summer window, and Wilde insists the coffers are almost bare. Press reports have suggested highly-rated young Welsh left back Gareth Bale could be a target for Premiership clubs, and, while Wilde would be loath to part with the rising star, Saints will have to cut their cloth accordingly following their summer spree. "£7 million is not a small sum for a club like ours," said Wilde. "If we wanted to bring in anyone new in January it might depend on us having to offload players."

MC Prussian Posted 17 November 2006 Posted 17 November 2006 Saints brush off Bale sale fears Southampton chairman Michael Wilde has denied Saints will be forced to sell teenage Wales full-back Gareth Bale in the January transfer window. Reports hinted Saints boss George Burley would have to sell the £7m-rated 17-year-old to raise transfer funds. But Wilde said: "Stories we have to sell Gareth in order to buy players are simply not true. "We're trying to build a team to get promoted and you don't do that by selling your best players." Bale is Wales' youngest international player, having won four caps so far, and is said to be attracting the attention of several Premiership clubs. The young defender, who has scored three Championship goals this season, is also said to be a target of Arsenal, who mounted a £12m raid on Saints last season for Bale's former team-mate Theo Walcott. Wilde added: "The January transfer window is an opportunity to improve the first-team squad. "If any players leave at that time it will be with the approval of the manager if he feels they are not part of his plans. "The manager's aim is to have a squad of around 25 players but some fringe players may move on if it benefits all parties, including the player himself. "Income received from player sales will go towards new players but it doesn't mean this will be the only funds available to the manager." OBO Posted 17 November 2006 Posted 17 November 2006 Bale is valued at 7m?!?! Is he actually THAT good?! I've only seen him play for Wales really and apart from being quite quick and scoring a brilliant free kick he didn't really look that special

Most players his age struggle to get a game week in week out for their clubs reserve (providing they have one <_< ) team, and he's playing and scoreing in full international football.

It will be interesting to see who Joe Mattock ends up playing for to get some proper football. Cos I doubt it will be much challenge to him playing Academy football next season.
