Samu Posted 17 January 2007 Posted 17 January 2007 I'm gonna have quite a lot of free time this term at uni (yes I know I'm a student and we do nothing) but I was thinking about doing some voluntary work. I just wondered what experience people had of volunteering for charities and what people would recommend. I've been looking on the internet but it's much better if I have your opinions on what you might have done and have found worthwhile. I know it's a bit vague but any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Louise Posted 17 January 2007 Posted 17 January 2007 Worked in a LOROS bookshop in Loughborough, mostly older ladies working there but all very nice, constant tea and biscuits! Duties were a bit of everything, pricing, shelf stacking, working behind the till, helping customers, taking in stock, binning stock, removing nude photographs from the books etc. Hours are obviously whatever you like, bit of a shortage of customers sometimes so can be a bit boring, but in the shop I was in there was always someone else there to talk to. I'd highly recommend it. That said, my sister worked for a Heart Foundation shop and didn't like it that much, mostly because the woman was in charge ran it with an iron fist. But I suppose it's pot-luck who you draw if you go into working in charity shop. Did a bit of work for various animal charities when I was much younger too and found quite a few authoritative people there as well. Ultimately though, it's all satisfying. Not sure you wanted an account of my exploits, but I hope that was slightly helpful!

Scarby Posted 17 January 2007 Posted 17 January 2007 i have done conservation work! Manchester Uni should have a society for volunteering (im guessing). If not why dont you start one!
The People's Hero Posted 17 January 2007 Posted 17 January 2007 Louise.... I'm a bit of a charity case. Grrrrr. (Kitkat)
Phube Posted 17 January 2007 Posted 17 January 2007 Just make sure you get the minimum wage for it, I've heard that some people doing so called Volutary 'work' get ripped off, some don't even get any money for it at all!!!???
Rincewind Posted 17 January 2007 Posted 17 January 2007 I've worked as a volunteer steward at the GBBF. Very rewarding Volunteer work normally means unpaid, but I got my accommodation breakfast and was given access to a free staff bar. Just one or two perks that helps.

hairy Posted 17 January 2007 Posted 17 January 2007 My mate read the Mercury to playback to blind people. He got a free Mercury in the deal but had already read it.

I thought volunteer work was something you did for nothing, giving up your own free time to help others not get paid for it? I know in some cases you might get your expenses paid for or a free meal for doing such work.
