Whelan calls for Dowd probe

Dave Whelan wants the Premier League to investigate claims referee Phil Dowd swore at Wigan Athletic players during the 2-1 defeat at Arsenal.

Dowd's performance at Emirates Stadium enraged Paul Jewell, with the Wigan boss later accusing the official of using foul language towards his players.

Latics chairman Whelan was also told by his players of the referee's conduct and is keen for the authorities to act.

"When I went into the dressing room afterwards, the lads were down at heart because they had played their socks off and deserved at least a draw," Whelan told Sky Sports News.

"What they did complain to me about was the referee using foul and abusive language to them - that's something I've never heard of and something I couldn't understand.

"He's using the F-word to our players and I could not understand it. I said to Paul Jewell 'that's not acceptable and we should take that up with the league'.

"If a player uses foul and abusive language to the referee, the referee will send him off, so surely the league cannot condone the referee using foul language like that to our players, and I suppose he's using it to Arsenal players as well."

Whelan also feels that Dowd's general level of performance throughout the season should come under scrutiny from Premier League chiefs.

He added: "You expect to get fairness. Refereeing is not easy, it's impossible to get it right all of the time.

"But this particular referee seems to get it wrong quite a lot and surely they've got to look at his performances over the last season.

"He gave something around 10 yellow cards yesterday and there was only one real foul in the whole game."

I don't know to much about the swearing, but i have to say it was a shocking performance by Dowd. Presumably Jewell and Wigan will be in the dock for this. :nono:

I don't think the penalty should have been awarded to Heskey therefore I'm on the referee's side. However I do agree with Jewell when he said Senderos got sent off for an offence that was exactly the same so they perhaps should have had on. "Only consistency is the inconsistency" I think anything like that should be a booking for the striker. Same with Watford's penalty against West Ham, although I'm glad the Hornets won it seems as though as soon as the defender touches the strikers shoulder he is shot down. Heskey, being likely to wiegh about 14st, could have stayed on his feet, and so could Yakubu and Henderson. I can't draw on Dowd's overall perfomance as I did not watch the match.

Dowd deserves relagating after that performance, as does Clattenberg.

refs do sometimes get a bit of unfair stick, it is a hard job, however i firmly believe that when its obvious they could do better they deserve the stick, I would say demote dowd to the championship but we don't want him so to leauge 1!

I'm really surprised by all this. I was at the game yesterday (my first time at the new stadium and it's amazing by the way) and think Wigan have a bit of cheek being so angry. Kirkland was wasting time from the first goalkick (including staying down with minimal contact before a second half Arsenal corner) and it was hugely frustrating for a neutral fan wanting to watch football. Dowd was weak and did nothing but then he booked Lehmann for time wasting - it was outrageous. He was a very weak referee but don't think Wigan have much grounds for complaint. There looked to be a clear cut Arsenal penalty at one point and a huge shout for handball (which I didn't see).

Couldn't understand why Jewell was so upset other then the fact that his team threw away the game due to poor concentration in the last 10 minutes. They got beaten by a far superior side in Arsenal, who play incredible football, yesterday was not the best example, and always looked likely to cut Wigan open late in the game. Having been to watch both Chelsea and Arsenal live this season there really is no comparison in stadium and quality of football.

Jewell and Whelan will get a slap on the wrists from the FA for that.

Jewell knows it, and I imagine Whelan does too.

But they have a point - perhaps the penalty wasn't, but the offside certainly was, and Wigan still had a player off the pitch who was refused a return to the action.

Either way you slice it, the decisions running up to the goal were a farce.

I thought it was a penalty. Even if the ref didn't see it then the linesman had a great view. If I were a Wigan fan I would expect my club to say something.

Im sick and tired of seeing pro players swearing at sailors at linos and refs and getting away with it. I was almost impressed that yesterdays ref was actually giving some back and I think its the way to go as theer is no way in a million years you will stop players from using "industrial" language. they all get away with it bar the odd one who is totally personal.

I agree with the people that say that Heskey could have stayed on his feet. He has added that dive in recent years which is pi$$poor. Then again, I can see why he did dive as he missed two clear cut chances and probably thought he would miss again.

The only thing I would pick up on the ref was for not booking the two Arsenal players who dived and tried to get penos earlier. He did well not to follow the usual trend of succumbing to the crowds wishes. Also, the lino messed up for not giving the lad offside who crossed to rosicky for the winner. It wasnt a great reffing performance but all the crazy stuff aboutthe ref swearing cracks me up as its blatant double standards.

The officiating was a bit farcical at times yesterday to be fair. There was a distinct lack of consistency and some degree of bias in the refereeing in particular, though the linesman had a shocker for Arsenals first goal.

Heskey could and maybe should have had a penalty as well just before Arsenal got their first.

Poor.

No mention of Adebayors clearly onside goal I see.

The closest I have come to officiating was when I was about 17 and stepped in to ref some 5-a-side games at Braunstone I think it was (indoor 5-a-side leagues were great back in the day) when they were short of refs and that always kicked off between the teams but I cant for the life of me work out how a lino can be skilled enough to look at two places at the same time and make a decision of offside or not and get it right all the time! Our game is 100mph and to expect them to get these decisions right all the time is impossible. We even see replays and cant work out if that lad was interferring with play or if there was daylight between them! They havent got a hope in hell!
