lookwhaticando Posted 13 February 2007 Posted 13 February 2007 I saw it on BBC World last night. Sensational stuff. He was lucky to land in the bushes - either side he had water (which would have done serious damage) and open land (which would also have done serious damage). The bit I like best is how the guy asks him if he's alright and he just says "No". HaHa What an understatement. All that and he broke an ankle and punctured a lung. Some guys have all the luck. PS: He fell 4,000m or 12,000ft - more than the 10,000 you've indicated!

MC Prussian Posted 13 February 2007 Posted 13 February 2007 Blimey. You've gotta count your blessings after that. Was it an attempted murder? Both parachutes failed to open. VERY bad luck.
filbertway Posted 13 February 2007 Posted 13 February 2007 Both parachutes failed to open. VERY bad luck. That might have been bad luck, but where he landed, good luck.

PS: He fell 4,000m or 12,000ft - more than the 10,000 you've indicated! Yeah, definitely 12,000 ft! Not sure having a punctured lung is such a blessing, but I guess it's better than being dead...
filbertway Posted 13 February 2007 Posted 13 February 2007 Yeah, definitely 12,000 ft! Not sure having a punctured lung is such a blessing, but I guess it's better than being dead... I read it as punctured leg, I didn't think it made much sence, punctured lung makes more sence
cisono Posted 13 February 2007 Posted 13 February 2007 I read it as punctured leg, I didn't think it made much sence, punctured lung makes more sence Haha punctured leg... cannot imagine what that would look like!!!
Geo V Posted 14 February 2007 Posted 14 February 2007 http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/pages/live/a...mp;in_a_source= I bet the poor sod though he was heading for the water and a swim until he changed course at the last minute?!
lookwhaticando Posted 14 February 2007 Posted 14 February 2007 Yeah, definitely 12,000 ft! Not sure having a punctured lung is such a blessing, but I guess it's better than being dead... Just a punctured lung is one hell of a blessing after plummeting 12,000 feet, with negligible resistance to the force of gravity. I bet the poor sod though he was heading for the water and a swim until he changed course at the last minute?! Wouldn't have been much of a swim, he'd have been killed if he hit the water.

Master Fox Posted 14 February 2007 Posted 14 February 2007 Just a punctured lung is one hell of a blessing after plummeting 12,000 feet, with negligible resistance to the force of gravity. Wouldn't have been much of a swim, he'd have been killed if he hit the water. I was watching it thinking why is he not trying to land in sea? I was thinking if he puts his hand over his nose and angles himself for a perfect pencil dive then surely he'll be fine? Then it dawned on me when he hit the bushes that the pencil dive probably wouldn’t be such a good a idea falling at that speed.
Suffolk_fox Posted 14 February 2007 Posted 14 February 2007 Hitting water at that speed would be like hitting concrete. So even a perfect dive would have smashed his skull and made him much shorter and very much wider...
lookwhaticando Posted 14 February 2007 Posted 14 February 2007 What if he did a perfect dive? Have you ever tried to position yourself for a perfect dive when plummeting towards a body of water at that speed? Thought not. Besides, it'd have been vein as Suffolk_fox points out. He fell 4,000m... gravity made him accelerate at a rate of 9.8m/s/s - needless to say, by the time he was just 100m up from the ground he was really shifting at fearsome velocity. The bushes were his only hope - something to break his fall before hitting solid ground or would-be concrete water.

cisono Posted 14 February 2007 Posted 14 February 2007 I am sure I have heard of other cases in which people managed to survive by "landing" in trees/bushes, often suffering just a broken leg or similar.
lookwhaticando Posted 15 February 2007 Posted 15 February 2007 Yeah but terminal velocity is about 120mph so he wouldn't go faster than that. 120mph or 1,200mph - it's still too fast to be hitting the ground. Have you ever hit the ground at 120mph? I imagine he was going a little slower than that, mind, because his parachute was partially deployed.
