Apparently at Asda Ps2 slimlines are £49 tomorrow. Not sure if it's true or for how long but I'll hopefully go and get one.

I heard a lot about the game, but I'm not so sure whether I should get it or not.

Apparently, it lacks many elements that made the initial series so great.

Well they've changed the combat. Magazine/Website etc reviews have all been good from what I can tell.

I'll probabley get it tomorrow if I can find it anywhere.

Just can't beat some hours with one of the best role-playing games in video game-history. Although the graphics don't live up to today's standards anymore, the sheer quantity of missions and the excellent story make more than up for it.

I was so hooked on it when it came out, I played it for days - sometimes until the early morning.

Anybody have any comments?

I'm getting used to the combat system and I think it's about time the series had a change, the game seems good but im not life sappingly addicted to it yet, which is strange seeing as I've played a good five hours.

I bought it on Friday - there was a pretty good bundle deal in town for less than 100 pounds for a black PS2 AND a copy of Final Fantasy XII in one package. Add a memory card to that and I spend slightly more than a hundred, which is wicked!

Same goes for the game. Although I do agree it takes some time to get used to the new system, as it breaks more or less with the typical "Random Encounters" engine from past titles. Now you basically choose whom you want to fight against.

Still have to figure out the details of the Gambit System - there a sheer endless possibility of combinations.

Although there aren't a lot of sidequests available (you're pretty much limited to the Mob Hunts), the game is addictive and it's a pure pleasure to wander around in HUGE, really HUGE levels. Even the cities seem bigger than ever before. The mature story - which starts out strong in the beginning - seems to lose its importance with time, though. And Vaan, who's supposed to be the main character, does not come across as likeable. We never really get to know him better. The rest of the team's cool and the voice actors did a great job. But one can obviously see how much the programmers and designers were inspired by Star Wars.

The graphics are awesome and sharp, only on a few occasions did I notice a little rendering problem when the data is loaded from the disc ("Staircase effect" without Anti-Aliasing).

I've played slightly more than 25 hours so far and must say it was a good buy.

it's ard, I never have any money becasue you don't get any cash for beating bad guys anymore. <_<

You do receive money for that, but only a few Gil (and not in all cases).

Most of the time, the only chance of getting some is by checking all treasure chests/pots in the area you're in.

You need to sell most items you gather during the quests. I always keep one on the side, the rest goes away. There are a few items - even in the beginning - that pay off pretty well.

Same goes for any weak armour or weapon that is no longer needed (still keep one of each).

That way, I've never had any real issues with the Gil here and you can always come back to the previous locations, stocking up on anything worthwile you think you missed out on. Thank SquarEnix for the Teleport Spheres.

Well after some mess up at the post office I finally had mine delivered to work today, so will check it out when i get home tonight, and post my initial thoughts!

I played about an hour of it and it, thought the graphics were superb. I'm not keen on the fighting mode, much prefered the 'random battles' and it'll take me a lil time to get used to the camera movement (especially after its only been a cpl of days since I completed FFX)

I usually find Final Fantasy games pretty slow to start so I guess I need to do alot more 'game play' before I comment further

Cheers Alex, kited myself out with some serious FF Bling now and life's alot easier.

How do you use your charchters Alex, do you have three main ones and forger the rest or do you try and level each one up to a decent level (that would take ages I know)?

Reason I ask is I've just done a Rather tough boss battle, and the only reason I got through is because I switched the party around a fair bit (although I suppouse my main damage dealer was blinded from the start so thats probabley another reason why I struggled), something I obviously wont be able to do later on if they're all 10 levels below the going rate.

Well, I'm serious about character development, so I keep all 6 of them in the same level range. Always. I'm about to reach level 32. That doesn't even take that much time, actually. Monsters respawn when you leave the same area again. In the larger areas, some of them even re-appear without you having to leave.

When you consider the amount of the lengthy cut-scenes, my current +/-34 hours of playing time are pretty much average. Whatever Final Fantasy part I play, I always want all characters reach their maximum level, so I can switch between them in case of emergency pretty easily.

Also keep in mind that the more Gambits used, the better. For that you need

a) enough License Points (LP) on the License Board

b) enough dough aka Gil

b) the appropriate spells bought from Magic Shops

And... voilà!

Thing is, if you don't level up your characters, you won't be able to use most of the spells sold later on because they consume more Magic Points (MP).
