Job dilemma

I have been in my job for about three weeks. Today I received a letter for an interview for another job which I applied for at the same time. I thought I had missed the deadline for the interview because in a reply letter they said if I didn't hear anything within 2 weeks then I wouldn't be on the shortlist. I'm doing ok in this job despite long hours and low pay. The boss seems ok and easy to get along with. The works pretty easy (sditting around watching tv and going on a patrol every hour or so) The other job is for a car-park security officer. More mone less hours but more involved. Id have to be on the go or alert most of the day, log cars in and out as well as dealing with security issues and the general public. The interviews for Friday which happens to fall on my day off. It's 10.30 but I don't get home until about 4. I could re-arrange it I suppose but as I'm settled in my new job is it better to cancel altogether? I'm not certain to get the job as there will be others there going for the job. Will it go against me if I say sorry I have now got a job that I'm satisfied with. They are sure to ask about it anyway at the interview. It would still be a month or more for me to find if I am successful or not.

I suppose I shouldn't be indesisive if I'm going after this particular job. :D

if you didnt have a job atm which one would you rather do?

When going for interviews it always looks good to be in a job rather than not!

There would be no harm in going to the Interview, at the end of the day you have nothing to loose, it's always good aswell to have interview experience and a boost of confidence if offered the job with a nice dilema?

Go for the interview, you've nothing to lose.

Nothing with going for the interview...

In the past, I had qualms about even leaving jobs, even a job I hated. However, I remembered in one situation, when the whole thing became unbearable, I talked to my boss's boss and found out that they were not bothered if I left.

Within a week or so I got a new job which paid 60% more, was more fun and gradually my salary increased to nearly 100% of what I used to get (by the time the contract ended three years later) :P

At least you won't be in the situation I found myself last Wednesday!!!

I rang for an application form and post details on Monday. She said the deadline was Wed 9am.

Nothing arrived by Tuesday afternoon, so rang again and they promised to email me the stuff.

Got home at 9:30pm and started filling in the application form etc.

Finished at 2:30am!

Got up at 7am, wrote a cover letter...

Drove to Nuneaton to deliver it in person by 9am.

The guy looks at it then goes

"thank you for your application. Unfortunately this vacancy closed 2 weeks ago"

:blink::o:(

You must have been livid! What a muppet that woman was sending out the details AND saying that the deadline was wednesday

If I can give you one bit of advice Ken it's don't sit back and take things for granted the only person who is going to look after you is you!!!

you could not go to the interview thinking that it's not fair on your new employer yet next week they could turn around and say sorry ken we don't need you anymore heres a weeks pay you can finish today!!

go to the interview see what they have to offer and take it from there, you will only have to give a weeks notice if it's a better offer with more security (no pun intended!!) then you should seriously think about it

I sat back once and settled into the routine and they turned round and made me redundant after nearly five years and didn't even bother paying me what I was owed.

I was so surprised I was speechless :o

The guy did take my completed application and forwarded it to the appropriate team in case there are any other jobs in the area, whether full-time or part-time. Perhaps things were meant to go that way. And I would prefer a part-time job to add to my current engagements...

So overall I am happy and hoping for good things in the future (either from there or elsewhere). :P

Sad, isn't it? :(

I have heard of this kind of "malpractice" from several sources...

Hence I agree with your advice.

From what you told me Lisa , your bosses are off their proverbial trolleys .

I'd recommend jumping ship before clinical depression sets in (if at all possible):thumbup:

The long term plan is underway. Short term, no bugger wants me. I'm sick of trying, to be fair.

It id at one of the Colleges. Called them up and re-arranged the interview for later on in the day. Don't know how many are after the job but its nice to get to the final selection group There is a selection panel so II have to impress more than one person. They may want me to move from college to college so not being a driver may be one factor against me But I'll see what happens. What I'm doing now is pretty cushy apart from going up and down four flight of stars every hour. Theres a TV in the guard base and there isn't a boss/manager breathing down my neck. It is an empty property which is up for sale. How long for is anybody's guess. It is a former Uni halls of residence so it is a big property and would need a big investment for any buyer. The only danger at the moment I can see to my job is if we lose the contract for the site and another one cannot be found for me in Leicester but that is a pesimistic view. The college job is more complex so theres more to foul up. But saying that if I was still in my last job It would be an improvement. Anyway it'll still be a few weeks after the interview before I hear anything so I'll take it from there. :D

Ps just had a call from the MD. I asked about the sites future and he said dont worry my job is secure even if the site is sold. He called to see if my pay cheque had arrived. Not many bosses would do that. He also asked if I could do tommorow if needed. The bloke whos doing it may have to cover somewhere else. He'll let me know one way or another before midday. At least I've been given plenty of notice (just confirmed it)

Oh well I'll need the extra money. Have a week off soon and not sure how many are paid days as I've not been there long.

Best of luck with that. May the best outcome materialise for you soon!
