Thracian Posted 22 June 2007 Posted 22 June 2007 A club very close to my heart died today Here I was in Scarborough when the news came through - attending to my father's grave. It made the news even more poignant somehow.
Population-1 Posted 22 June 2007 Posted 22 June 2007 In addition to the Foxes I follow Prescot Cables, who play in the Unibond Northern Premier. Cables would have been facing Scarborough next year had they not folded as they had just been relegated from the Conference North into the Unibond. Non-league football is a credit to the profession and I get as much joy from visits to the likes of Witton Albion, Marine, Whitby Town etc as I do travelling to watch the mighty foxes. Scarborough are unfortunately just another of an ever increasing list of clubs who are disappearing only to be reborn. Within the Unibond we have seen the likes of Spennymoor and AFC Telford as just two examples of late and Leek Town nearly followed suit a few months ago but thankfully won a reprieve at the last minute. Cables themselves rely on the goodwill of the Supporters Trust to survive on average attendances of 250 a week - and all this in a Division just two below the Conference. I tell you, being a member of the Unibond League makes me proud to be a fan of the beautiful game - something I can no longer say when referring to the so called 'Premiership'. Its a sad indictment on the state of non-league club finances that the 2007/08 fixtures for the majority of leagues are only set to be released in early July. A high proportion of league governors are yet to be 100% assured which clubs will still be in existence come August. Long live non-league football and long live Scarborough FC.
Mike the Metal Ed Posted 23 June 2007 Posted 23 June 2007 Such a tragedy to see such an old club die. We'll always have the beginning of our 1997 League Cup run, and Jamie Lawrence's suicide dive headlong into the goalpost. I really hope a new club will help the name live on. Out of interest, why shouldn't Jimmy Glass have been playing for Carlisle that day?
potter3 Posted 23 June 2007 Posted 23 June 2007 I remember the Jimmy Glass goal being mentioned on MotD Goal

AmericanScott Posted 18 April 2009 Posted 18 April 2009 Two years later... McCain looks a bit different: What a shame. 1:12 looks like the local crack dealer's office now. Such a nice ground. Shame.
