Joe. Posted 29 June 2007 Posted 29 June 2007 Link This could be the type of quality that Newcastle have been lacking in so badly over the last few seasons at the back. Although they are signing him despite the fact that he is going to be out of action for four to six months...

He's out till around Christmas time and he never was one of Barcelonas better players and he's now 30. We'll see, he's an alright player but I wouldn't say he was the touch of quality Newcaslte have been lacking.
Cat Burger Posted 29 June 2007 Posted 29 June 2007 Barcelona are a massive club, difficult to impress at a place like that. He was very good for Lyon I think, I believe it's a good signing mainly because he has a good attitude (the one thing a lot of Newcastle players lack) I have no worries in terms of quality either just that fact that he's injured. At least they're signing defensive players!!! They've made me sick of the past few years.

Well I was trying to kind of get at the fact he's 'quality' compared to what they had last season e.g Bramble, Boumsong, Ramamge etc. It's a decent start for them at the back and the sort of player they need to be signing I believe.
escape2victory Posted 29 June 2007 Posted 29 June 2007 From what ive seen from him he is actually a pretty poor defender. Takes way too many risks. He does though have good technique and is probably better as a defensive midfielder. A blood and guts, die for the cause centre half he is not.
Nationwider Posted 29 June 2007 Posted 29 June 2007 This has classic Albert Luque/Titus Bramble/Jean-Alain Boumsong/Michael Owen Geordie big-name ****-up smeared all over it in black and white. Do this bunch of tw*ts not learn anything? 30 year-old Brazilian defender. Do me a favour. Roque Junior @ Leeds, anyone?

dandannieldanok Posted 29 June 2007 Posted 29 June 2007 Edmilson won't be much of an improvement on what they already have tbh. Although, things can't get much worse defensively for them.
Raj Posted 29 June 2007 Posted 29 June 2007 Micheal Owen's doing alright isn't he? How exactly do you come to that conclusion???
Lovejoy Posted 29 June 2007 Posted 29 June 2007 How exactly do you come to that conclusion??? Possibly a hint of sarcasm
Nationwider Posted 29 June 2007 Posted 29 June 2007 At £102,000 per week, Michael Owen is definitely doing alright.
act smiley Posted 29 June 2007 Posted 29 June 2007 Although, things can't get much worse defensively for them. To be honest, they didn't conceed that many last season, mostly thanks to some decent keepers (well, maybe not Srnicek but the other three were good). They just conceeded some crucial goals, so kept losing 2-1 or drawing when they should have won. I wouldn't say they're that far from having a good defense, all I think it'll take them is one centreback (Rozenhal maybe) and a leftback and they'll be fine, especially if Given doesn't get a nasty injury again.
