Mort Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 Sunderland withdraw Nugent offer Sunderland have pulled out of the race for Preston striker David Nugent. According to the Black Cats website, they agreed a fee believed to be £7m with the North End for the 22-year-old but will now focus on other targets. Club chief executive Peter Walker said: "I can confirm we have withdrawn our offer for the player. "Naturally work continues behind the scenes to strengthen our squad ahead of the new season and talks are on-going with a number of targets." Nugent was given permission to speak to two clubs after he returned from duty with the England Under-21 squad at the European Championship last month. One of the teams was believed to be Sunderland, while West Ham and Everton were also linked with him. BBC Sport understands that talks had taken place with the player and his representatives for a month before Sunderland boss Roy Keane became frustrated with the situation. Nugent joined Preston from Bury in January 2005 for a fee believed to be in the region of £100,000. The Liverpool-born forward has made 94 Championship appearances for Preston, scoring 33 goals. Sheffield United tried to buy him in the January 2007 transfer window but North End rejected the offer. But the striker made it clear last season that he saw his future in the Premiership. "I want to be playing in the Premiership week in, week out, that's where I need to be," he said. "I want it to be with Preston, but if not, it'll have to be somewhere else." Preston finished seventh in last season's Championship, missing out on a place in the play-offs. Nugent is an Everton fan and has previously said: "My hero was Duncan Ferguson and, hopefully, I will play for them in my career and I'm confident I will do." He made his full England debut in the win over Andorra in March, scoring in the final minute of the game. The cap was the first by a Preston player since Sir Tom Finney and he became England's first outfield player from outside the top-flight since Michael Gray in 1999. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...ton/6229832.stm
Simi Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 Having the European Championships in between certainly didn't help push the deal through. Difficult to say where he will end up now. I'm sure Man City are likely to join the race now they have their millions. Everton have also been sniffing around I think.
Chairman of the Bored Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 Very surprised. Thought that was a done deal. Odds on Everton now.
Head Honcho Posted 2 July 2007 Posted 2 July 2007 He's an Everton fan so he's digging his heals in waiting for them!
Mort Posted 2 July 2007 Author Posted 2 July 2007 I get the impression that Keane saw that Nugent didn't really have any desire to play for Sunderland and was probably dragging his heals on any deal and just thought he wouldn't be the kind of player that he'd want in his team as Nugent would blatantly be more interested in playing for Everton than anyone else... that said screws up the name I'd get for my Mackem shirt this season (second team! before i get flamed for that... ).
MC Prussian Posted 3 July 2007 Posted 3 July 2007 Nugent and Alan Smith to Everton? That'd be quite a nice striking force together with Johnson. That and all English.
Blue Bob Posted 3 July 2007 Posted 3 July 2007 Also a bit of Keane showing he is a manager who wont be messed about with. If you want to sign then sign if not then fook off!!! I am sure Keane has other targets and wants to send a clear message to them too.

Paving the way for Beattie to leave as well I should think. Anichebe looks a good prospect for them, so I think they would be keen to let Beattie leave.
The Reverend Posted 3 July 2007 Posted 3 July 2007 He wants to go to the Toffees. Hes a Mersey boy. Fair Play.
Simi Posted 3 July 2007 Posted 3 July 2007 He wants to go to the Toffees.Hes a Mersey boy. Fair Play. On SSN they reckon he is in talks with Pompy
The Reverend Posted 3 July 2007 Posted 3 July 2007 On SSN they reckon he is in talks with Pompy Yeah so i've heard. He wants to go to Everton though surely. Even if perhaps they dont want him.
Simi Posted 3 July 2007 Posted 3 July 2007 Yeah so i've heard. He wants to go to Everton though surely. Even if perhaps they dont want him. I'm sure he does want to go to Everton, but I'd hope first team football was his priority at the moment. Saying that, he may have a good chance to get in at Everton. Johnson Smith (?) Beattie... Leaving ? Anichebe
The People's Hero Posted 3 July 2007 Posted 3 July 2007 Also a bit of Keane showing he is a manager who wont be messed about with. If you want to sign then sign if not then fook off!!! I am sure Keane has other targets and wants to send a clear message to them too. Agreed. Fair play to him. Is proving as ruthless and effective as a manager (so far) as he did as a player.
NFFC Chris Posted 4 July 2007 Posted 4 July 2007 No way is Nugent worth 7 million, hugely overrated, these transfer fees are becoming more ridiculas every day.
The Reverend Posted 4 July 2007 Posted 4 July 2007 No way is Nugent worth 7 million, hugely overrated, these transfer fees are becoming more ridiculas every day. I agree. Good player, but worth that much i dont really think so. But in the market we're in, this is where we're at.
Blue Bob Posted 4 July 2007 Posted 4 July 2007 I agree.Good player, but worth that much i dont really think so. But in the market we're in, this is where we're at. That three inch tap in for England didnt help. That must have put a couple of million on his value!!!
