Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 10 July 2007 Posted 10 July 2007 Can't see how that will benefit anyone right now except Lincoln.Leicester need another left-back as well as Mattock and Sheehan doesn't need to convince himself or anyone else that he's good enough for Division Two...not even Manwell! Indeed I wonder how MA's made his decision on Sheehan because he's had a whole heap of problems these last 16 months or so and I can't see how he would have ever watched him at his best. He sure looked a decent player today and cracked a quality goal, apparently. When did any left-back of Leicester's score? And, as I've said, he can make goals too - and regularly. Mattock is a good, potentially excellent player but I don't see him as being involved in goalmaking to the same extent as Sheehan and as I've said constantly, you need your attacks to start from defence. We've never had that these last two years and have never threatened to score enough goals. How much convincing do people need?. We also need someone to take free-kicks. Porter can do it, no question, but Sheehan is something of a specialist and certainly the best I've seen at City including Gudjonsson. Firstly, let me say that Sheehan needs to convince me. This is because, as I had said earlier on in the thread, the games in which he played well for us are surely counter balanced by those in which he played at a poor level for Mansfield, against crap opposition. Secondly, a while back you started a thread about Fryatt and the possibility of him leaving. Alot (and I mean alot) of people expressed their opinion that with a good pre-season under his belt, and back to full fitness, Fryatt could well bag a few this season. You called these people "flag-wavers", suggesting that everyone had some sort of special allegiance with Fryatt. Yet, surely, Fryatt has done more to earn this support than Sheehan, who, from your descriptoion, cannot actually play football, but can take a good free-kick. Everyone is aware that Sheehan possesses talent, but I think that other people are right in saying that he probably doesn't feature in Allen's plans, so surely sending him out on loan is a logical and sensible thing to do. If you are that desperate to see Sheehan playing first team football for City, you'd agree that he has more of a chance of impressing the manager on loan than in training, because I think Allen's mind is made up that Mattock will most probably start at left-back. Sheehan will get a place on merit when (and it is a when) he performs at a consistently high level for Lincoln, or wherever he goes. I do hope he gets that chance, but if I were to pick an XI now, Shehhan wouldn't be in it.

I made a lot of comments about Fryatt from before day one last season and am happy that all of them were justified by events. He wasn't fit to start with, didn't deserve his place, was brought back too quickly and while still out of condition, very rarely justified a starting position and totally underperformed as a striker overall. I promised him a clean slate this season and have been much more impressed so far and see no point in repeating my concerns. Sheehan is a different type of full-back to Mattock and I really see little point in comparing them except to say that I think we're lucky to have such a pair. I would develop both players in tandem. My preference might change before the season begins but if I had to decide today I'd start with Sheehan. In fact I think too much is expected of Mattock right now. He is not the finished article no matter how much people on this forum and, more important, people in the club would like to push him quickly forward. I understand the reasons but patience will pay in the end. Where you got the idea that I somehow don't think Sheehan can play football from I don't know. He might have his faults, who doesn't? But he's is an excellent and quite cultured footballer with good control, decent close and long-range passing skills and is very supportive and effective going forward.
Thracian Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 Seems like Leicester City left back Alan Sheehan is not going on loan to Lincoln, at least not now. He was expected to confirm his loan there this week but has not done so and Lincoln have now taken Antony tonkin (ex-Yeovil, Crewe, Stockport) on trial. Whether that means Sheehan intends to try to fight his way into Martin Allen's reckoning or wants to wait until the last moment to consider what options arise remains to be seen.

I know everyone has faults, but it's the amount of faults that can recognise someone as a good footballer. From what I've seen of Sheehan, I wouldn't give him a starting place, but I would have him on the bench because I believe he could be effective as a substitute. I also believe that Sheehan and Mattock are quite similar full-backs, both are quick and, as you say, have good control. The last thing I want Mattock to become embroiled in is a Theo Walcott-esque affair when the hype doesn't justify the talent, and no, he's not the finished article, but when he played he was powerful and exciting to watch. It is these types of attributes that make a player appealing to the fans. I think we are of very different opinions and both have valid points. If you are prepared to give Fryatt a second chance then I'm sure I'll give Sheehan a go.

Can i ask how you know this? I see McAuley scored last night in your 4-1 win at Kettering Town.

Fair enough n we need some left sided players so hopefully we'll sign some soon. I think we'll have 1 or 2 in before our pre-season match against Lincoln United. Up the imps.
General Smuts Posted 18 July 2007 Posted 18 July 2007 On his display at Hinckley if Sheehan gets loaned out it will be a travesty, he was one of the best players on the park, quick, strong, passed immaculately and created everything getting himself an assist in the process. He has proved to me that he is capable of pushing for a starting place and is more than adequate cover when needed.
