Nationwider Posted 9 July 2007 Posted 9 July 2007 I've seen three doctors in four days, but no-one knows what's wrong with me. Given the symptoms, my money's on shingles - but the medical establishment aren't buying it. Has anyone ever had shingles? If so, how much of a bugger is it to get rid of?
Katy Posted 9 July 2007 Posted 9 July 2007 I got shingles when I was 18 (bout 15 years ago, so memory is hazy) it was a small patch on my stomach and it was in a circle (sort of) it hung around a while but then disappeared but it hurt like hell and even made me pass out once. Having said that it didn't stop me going to watch us play against Blackburn at Ewood park when Rooster Russell smacked the ball past Bobby Mimms Anyway, Nation, is it really, really painful deep down where the spots are? Is it sort of in a clump and a bit crusty? If so then it's shingles and you need to find a new General Practitioners
davieG Posted 9 July 2007 Posted 9 July 2007 MrsG had it many years ago and was extremely painful if i remember. This website explains the symptoms.
Bluefoxtim Posted 9 July 2007 Posted 9 July 2007 I was diagnosed with shingles a couple of years ago... They were just itchy as hell... didn't hurt
Kent Fox Posted 9 July 2007 Posted 9 July 2007 My missus is a Nurse. Shingles is like Chicken pox again, but worse. Oh, btw, it can kill ya! You'll be alright though, I'm sure... Not as fatal so much these days. But it can be!

stez Posted 9 July 2007 Posted 9 July 2007 why can't illness' have proper scary names? shingles just sounds so jolly, almost christmassy, death rash or central nervous system trauma. i mean; chicken pox? why not alligator pox, or black widow pox and stuff. also a friend of mine had death rash on his face! gutted.

It's also called <h2 style="color: rgb(204, 107, 0); margin-top: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">Herpes zoster</h2>

MBK Posted 9 July 2007 Posted 9 July 2007 Huh? Herpes Zoster, practically the condition follows chicken pox (Varicella Zoster) infection whereby the dormant virus in nerves migrate to the periphery and cause inflammation and cysts. Pretty painful, limited treatment however extremely easy to spot because tends to stick to a certain symmetry.
Nationwider Posted 9 July 2007 Author Posted 9 July 2007 Thanks for the input, people. Without getting too graphic, I'm covered in chicken pox-like scars, but having had CP, and also having a very weak immune system, it might be shingles. I'm not getting any symmetry or discernable pattern with the scars though - just an all-over peperoni effect.... and some other zany symptoms which I'll not share. Anyway, no worky for this week, so lots of bad-tempered moaning on FT from me for you all to look forward too.

Unit Posted 10 July 2007 Posted 10 July 2007 The mrs says she had it 2 years ago, "DON'T TAKE THE CREAM THEY GIVE YOU" she had an itchy rash on her back and apparently the shingles cream made it a LOT worse - for her. The tablets come in big doses, 10-a-day each 400mg, 4000mg a day, BOOM for a week, that fixed it.

Katy Posted 11 July 2007 Posted 11 July 2007 Sadly it's best to have them when you are a babon apparently. I've got a CP scar on my cheek and eye socket - not impressed, I was about 6 or so when I got them. What's the latest NW?

I feel alright apart from it spreading to my tonsils and tongue - but my face is not a pretty sight (well, even less so than usual). I think a few scars are a certainty. Neither Mrs NW or the boy have had CP so I'm sort of quarantined...
