FOXES AIM TO RUN BEFORE THEY WALK

09:45 - 24 July 2007

It Is only a few weeks ago that Billy Sharp, the Iron's record-breaking goalscorer last season, got his hands on the League One title amid memorable scenes at Glanford Park.

It is 50 years since the same happened at Leicester City. The Foxes won the Division Two championship in 1957, with Arthur Rowley hitting a club record 44 goals - 12 more than Sharp struck for S****horpe to shatter Barrie Thomas' 45-year record.

Leicester went on to enjoy their longest period of prosperity, spending 12 years in the top-flight before suffering relegation in 1969.

Martin O'Neill oversaw the most successful spell in the club's history nearly 30 years later, with four successive top-10 finishes in the Premiership between 1997 and 2000.

The likes of Neil Lennon, Muzzy Izzet, Robbie Savage, Emile Heskey and former S****horpe United defender Matt Elliott were all part of the squad O'Neill brilliantly shaped.

He guided them to League Cup glory twice, in 1997 and 2000 - ending a 26-year wait for silverware - and UEFA Cup qualification, before he left for Celtic in June 2000.

Leicester were relegated from the Premiership in their last season at Filbert Street in 2002, and fell into administration with debts of £30-million.

It is five years now since they were playing in the top-flight.

Their new stage, the impressive Walkers Stadium, is only a stone's throw away from Filbert Street - their home for 111 years that is now demolished.

But the club's fortunes are a lot further away from those they enjoyed in their old home.

They have endured mid-table mediocrity in the Championship in the past four seasons and ended the last campaign in 19th place, just three precarious places above the relegation zone.

In short, they have been light-years away from a return to the Premiership.

Club owner Milan Mandaric has turned to another Martin, Martin Allen, to inspire a revival of fortunes. And the former Brentford and MK Dons boss has wasted no time making a start.

He has made a staggering 11 signings ahead of the new season - and even chased ex-Liverpool and England attacker Robbie Fowler before he opted for a move to Cardiff.

He has notably landed Carl Cort from Wolves to add firepower to the Foxes squad and former Bolton defender Bruno N'Gotty and Radostin Kishishev, from Charlton, to give them experience and steel at the back.

Stephen Clemence, son of ex-Iron keeper Ray Clemence, and DJ Campbell have also arrived from Birmingham.

Allen is in no doubt about the challenge laying ahead of him.

"It is to try and get this club promoted," he said.

"It's a big challenge but it's very exciting. The challenge is rebuilding a squad at a club that, in the last four years, have been 18th, 15th, 16th and 19th."

It took four years of Mandaric control and money to get Portsmouth promoted into the big time.

City fans, eager for a return to the Premiership, will be hoping they don't have to wait that long.

Iron players will be following in famous footsteps when they walk out at the Walkers Stadium at the end of March.

Kaka, Ronaldo and Rivaldo and Roberto Carlos played for Brazil there in a friendly against Jamaica in October 2003 - four months after Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole had fired England to victory against Serbia. It might just inspire.

Probably a run down day by day of all the Championship teams (wetting the appetite), today is Leicester. Billy Sharp is their highest scorer, Rowley is ours. I guess their pretty excited by being in this league. I can't see the Merc doing a write up for S****horpe.

But they sold Sharp over a month ago. We kept Rowley, hence the 12 years of top flight status. There's no relevance, the writer's had a touch of the Fox In A Box's.

Top goal scorer is probably the only thing that they have as comparison. 32,000 seater - 9,000 seater (some standing) niether comparison quite works. I think someone might have been getting excited by the mention of Billy Sharp, he's def gone Sheff U.
Strange, they must be short of excitement up there, trying to fill up back page space by making very strenuous links to ther teams who they might play lol
Just as we have done each time we have got to the Prem.

Did they start a bafflingly incoherant competition called "songs for the championship"?
