David O'Leary Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 Will Marcus Trescothick ever get into an england shirt ever again? he had the perfect opportunity to do this at the twenty20 world cup, i mean it is a low pressure tournament, only two weeks long at the most and and he will be well suppourted on his first tour back, dont get me wrong i'm not having a go, it must be hard leaving your wife and kids to go on long tours to the other side of the world, but if he can't do this, i'm sure he won't be ready for long tours to sri lanka and new zealand which our next away tours with the australians coming back in 2009 we need to figure out our best team fairly soon so they can get a load of match practice i just wonder wether he will ever tour again
Flynny Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 I said earlier this year (I'd like to find the post to see just how prescient I actually was) that if he didn't get back against the Windies or India, he wouldn't be back for ages, possibly ever. If you're out with depression that bad, you don't want to rejoin the team away, you work your way in gently. If he isn't 100% ready and feeling confident, he'll be no use. Is he playing the twenty20 or not?

Simi Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 I think to say that 20/Twenty isn't high pressure is ridiculous. It's become so popular with the fans etc, all eyes would be on his return as well.
Joe. Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 I think he will. He's clearly a good player, and I don't think he'll want to completely leave the international scene forever. Give it more time, and he might collect and prepare himself.
Ultra Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 He might well do, but will he be able to displace either Strauss or Cook? I'm not convinced..
Flynny Posted 27 July 2007 Posted 27 July 2007 On current form Princess Michael of Kent could displace Strauss.
Ultra Posted 28 July 2007 Posted 28 July 2007 Strauss is on a poor run at the moment. But as they say, form is temporary, class is permanent...
Flynny Posted 28 July 2007 Posted 28 July 2007 Strauss is on a poor run at the moment. But as they say, form is temporary, class is permanent... Not when he's been failing for 6 months now and is still yet to find form. It doesn't help that his entire style of play is negated by full-length bowling, either. I have a feeling he might not regain his place, should he be dropped.
Ultra Posted 28 July 2007 Posted 28 July 2007 He had a decent knock in the last test, even if it was at Lord's... Even if he is dropped, there are a few other options beside Trescothick.

It was still laboured and entirely bereft of class. And yeah, I'd expect maybe Bopara or Shah in the next test if he is dropped.
Pete_foxes Posted 28 July 2007 Posted 28 July 2007 Hes capable of it definatly. It does just depend on whether he feels up to it himself. He just needs to keep banging them in for his County & then should get the chance.
Micky Ruddle Posted 29 July 2007 Posted 29 July 2007 IMO, i would like to see him pull on the England shirt, but somehow i'm feeling that he may let us down again, if he gets a chance. Alright, it is a stress-related illness, and i can't imagine how hard it is for him, but we need players that are willing to play for our country. Players that are ready. I agree with what Michael Vaughan said... "I think by making this decision it could give him a chance of playing again," "The last thing I wanted was for him to come out and play too soon because I thought that could be the end of him. The one thing which Tres loves doing more than anything is playing cricket for England. He's not ready at the minute but hopefully he will get in the right frame of mind and get his body right to make sure he will play again."
Wasyls Pec Deck Posted 29 July 2007 Posted 29 July 2007 A journalist friend of mine said Vaughn was banging Trescothicks wife....hence the personal stuff that was going on with him, but the papers didn't print it...so if Vaughns the test captain looks unlikely this aint bollox btw, nor is it of some football-rumours type website!

Yeah I heard that as well and apparently Tresco once had to be held back from going psycho on Vaughan at his last England nets session.

David O'Leary Posted 1 August 2007 Author Posted 1 August 2007 who cares about tresa??? people who want england to win
David Villa Posted 1 August 2007 Posted 1 August 2007 I would pick Trescothick over Cook anyday, no other opener for England dares attack bowlers at the start of an innings like Marcus does, if it wasnt for Trescothick in The Ashes in 2005 we would never have got such solid starts at the starts of innings. The innings at Edgebaston he hit 90 before lunch and that is impressive. So when Marcus feels that it is right to come back to the England camp i think the coach will have hesitation to drop either Cook or Strauss.
The People's Hero Posted 1 August 2007 Posted 1 August 2007 Strauss is on a poor run at the moment. But as they say, form is temporary, class is permanent... If you're using the criteria of 'class' to rule in favour of Strauss/Cook/Bell etc over Trescothick, well, then you're not even worthy of the derision with which your argument really merits.
