Hullfox Posted 12 February 2008 Posted 12 February 2008 I've popped back for the evening to see how this went. Thanks to davieG for organising this. In truth there was never any real debate to be had though thanks to Ultra for arguing so obtusely that even I would have almost voted for myself. DB11 summed the thing up quite succinctly. I did enjoy constructing the proposal though, no matter how weak a suggestion it may have seemed on first impressions. I'm glad that other posters made a better fist of pooh-poohing the idea, it's nice to read such intelligent debate for a change. Anyway, enjoy the future debates and good luck whoever is in the chair next time round.

Manwell Pablo Posted 13 February 2008 Posted 13 February 2008 Maybe so, but votes for extremist political parties are good indicators of unrest in the mainstream and their value as such should not be underestimated. And i'm pretty sure that nick griffin could pass any required test but it did not stop him becoming a BNP candidate ( so presumably he voted for them previously ) Again you misunderstand me, I don't have a problem (well I do but anyway) with people voteing for the BNP or the BNP standing, it's people voteing for them without understanding what they are doing. Obviously IQ testing for voters is wrong but all this talk of elitest, dictatorships etc is well....bollocks

Rincewind Posted 13 February 2008 Posted 13 February 2008 I don't think voting for the BNP is directly linked to politics. It is more to do with society. If the media do not report the news fairly then people receive the wrong information to base their views on. Peoples knowledge can only be based on what goes on and what they see around them. Not many broadsheet readers buy the Tabloids as not many tabloid readers buy the broadsheets. An IQ test would not change some peoples view as they would not believe the answers They would say the answers were fixed for the benefit of the government in power. The German people did not know the true intention and policies of Hitler yet they still were behind him mainly because he promised abetter living for the German people. Germanys economy did improve prior to the war.
The People's Hero Posted 13 February 2008 Posted 13 February 2008 I don't think voting for the BNP is directly linked to politics. It is more to do with society. So what exactly is politics then if not the opinions/wants/needs and subsequent policy of a society? In our (flawed) system, that is sought through a democratic first-past-the-post system, but still, voting for the BNP has a VERY DIRECT link to politics (whether you want to view that with a big or little p - if that makes sense). If nothing else, the BNP vote also serves as a useful barometer of a) discontent and b) stupidity/bigotry levels in the country.
Webbo Posted 13 February 2008 Posted 13 February 2008 Gotta say Davie after reading that that it doesn't seem that bad.
Manwell Pablo Posted 13 February 2008 Posted 13 February 2008 Gotta say Davie after reading that that it doesn't seem that bad. Suprisingly the worst of the bickering has been deleted. (Not by me Thracian) So whos up next week I'll gladly do it if Mr Gibson agrees to check me spelling
