Jordan Posted 21 February 2008 Posted 21 February 2008 Here's a little thread about the timeless menswear item (also an acceptable accessory for punk girls). I prefer mine to be very thin because I like to advertise my pretentiousness to all passers-by. Three inches wide is too big; 2.75" (7 cm?) is cutting it close but OK when more conservative attire is necessary. I'm currently wearing a black and silver horizontally-striped beauty from H&M, those fine Swedish haberdashers to the poor. It's less than 1.5" wide, which must be some sort of record since the days of Lambretta scooters (or at least The Cars). And yes, I decided that I'm not even going to act like I'm trying at work. I'm texting this on my phone. So ... what do you wear?
danny. Posted 21 February 2008 Posted 21 February 2008 I bought this the other day http://www.paulsmith.co.uk/ties-224/mens-t...LproductId=6197 and some matching cufflinks goes with the shirt I got t'other week nicely!! http://www.paulsmith.co.uk/formal-shirts-1...LproductId=6074 (matches the inside of the sleeves)
Webbo Posted 21 February 2008 Posted 21 February 2008 When I was at school we always tied our ties with a big thick windsor knots and about 4'' of tie remaining. Don't know why,we all did. (Futter's interesting fact from yester year number 1)
lookwhaticando Posted 21 February 2008 Posted 21 February 2008 Whatever tie I happen to be wearing, I aim to have a good wide knot. There's nothing like having a fat one under your collar.
Finnegan Posted 21 February 2008 Posted 21 February 2008 I do, in fact, own a "Howling Pelle" white tie. I'm that cool.
Rincewind Posted 21 February 2008 Posted 21 February 2008 I have to wear one and its a clip on standard. But most of the time I just leave it handy to put on quickly if I need to. I do not like them and long periods of wearing one gives me a choking feeling. I have moved all my top buttons on my official work shirts to the edge to make them looser. Used to wear them when younger because you needed one to get in places like the Palais (who remembers that?) I have a City tie for special occasions.
Jordan Posted 22 February 2008 Author Posted 22 February 2008 Applause for dannyuk1982 for bringing in color coordination and other accessories into this thread with the very first reply! In addition to cufflinks (I don't wear French cuffs, so I never have them), don't forget about mixing things up with a pocket square White linen is usually my preference, but sometimes a red or blue one with certain ties or if a little more flair is needed. I found a photo of myself from about 8-9 years ago wearing a tie... upon close inspection, I realized that I was sporting the masterpiece pictured below: [edit: pictures aren't working, so http://i15.ebayimg.com/08/i/000/c4/76/02f1_1.JPG] My god, that is hideous and amazing at the same time.
