Academy Experiences

OK you shabby lot stand by your beds and listen up.

I've been asked to co author a paper for a coaching association on the academy system in the UK. Frankly, Mr Shankly it's a subject that I don't know very much about (though I have a lot of semi well founded suspicions that it is a big steaming heap of poo).

I'd be interested to hear about posters direct and indirect experiences of football academies throughout this grotty land. I would also be keen to hear of the experiences of older posters on this thread about the YTS and apprentice days.

Another area that I want to cover is scouting in the youth, amateur and semi professional leagues. So any anecdotes about scouting incompetence will be warmly welcomed as long as they are true. I've got about a month to complete so that will give some of you time to unearth a few second hand gems.

That's all for now - you can resume wanking when I switch the lights out.

One of my best mates Craig, was scouted for Southampton.

He was a good young player and was invited to a football session where the scout would look for certain skills for certain areas of the pitch. This time (without any participants knowing) the scout was looking for a striker who was looking for someone who scored a 1st touch goal you know when it comes to you and bang, goal! Well my mate did this and was offered a further trial. Craig also got scouted for Millwall, Charlton and Man City. I believe these came from playing when representing the district leauge. A scout spotted him and was offered a trial. I know why he did not play for man city, His diggs were on Moss Side and for a 16 year old kid from a sleepy town and 300 miles away he did not fancy it, I did tell him he was a fool! He was also offered a contract by Millwall by when we were about 16 we played in the cup / plate final and he wanted to play in the match but the club did not want him to play in it. Any way as kids do he played in the game and then wanted to sign after, for some reason which I don't recall he never did sign! He is now a carpenter last time i spoke with him >_<

Also I Jamie Mackie who was at Mk Dons, Exeter and now Plymouth was a good mate a few years back. He was scouted by a guy now at Spurs called Alex Inglethorpe who at the time was manager of Leatherhead. Basically as I see it if anyone who was any good in the local youth leagues was any good they were scouted by these small town teams and asked for a trial then given a small contract. In this case tho I Jamie was offered around to clubs by Alex, he must have known someone at MK dons whilst Martin Allen was there possibly even Allen as Inglethorpe did work at Brentford.

How long ago did all this take place?

Top story 8 years and bottom one about 5 years ago

If I was to ask you what your gut feeling was about scouting in the local and lower leagues would you say that interest is as strong as it ever was or that it is dropping off?

I think it is still strong. I only make this judgement as I know a kid who is at LCFC and was scouted through his school I think.

There is a school of thought that states that academies are killing off the flow of talent into the professional game. Coaches who sign up to this theory feel that if kids and teenagers are not picked up by their local clubs they give up all hope of ever making it as a professional. Up until about 20 years ago you could still be playing park football into your 20's and still make it with a big club (Ian Wright is the classic case here). Does anyone know of more recent cases?

Some coaches feel that it is the monopoly that academies have over local talent that is ultimately choking off supply. And both they and others are sceptical about the academy culture and the quality of coaching found in them. The fact that no top level talent has emerged nationally since Walcott was unearthed three years ago (except possibly goalkeeping prospects) suggests there might be some thing in this view. Others say the dirth of national talent is simply down to fierce international competition (particularly from African expats) and the fact that fewer kids in this country are playing football these days.

Anyone out there with their own evidence to support or contradict either opinion?

Wasn't Al Bangura picked up by Watford after a scout saw him playing in a park? Then again I'm not sure how old he was at the time, but I guess it shows it can still happen if you have the talent.

Jay DeMerit didn't get a trial from MLS, so ended up flying over and played in step 4 which is what one up from where Wright was playing?

Kightly was at step 5 before he went to Southend, then the Conference when he went to Wolves.

And of course DJ Campbell went from Step 4 to Conference back to step 4, won promotion with Yeading to step 3 then went to League One, the Premiership and now here.

So yes, players from non-league can still end up making a decent career of football.

Deej has never been in the prem :dunno:

He went to brum when they was in this league and then they flogged him to us when they got promoted.

Went there in January just before they went down. Don't think he made many Premiership appearances though.
