A sad story of loss and frustration

Back in December last year, I bought a new Desktop PC, seeing that my old one was about 6 or 7 years old already and just didn't do the trick anymore.

I bought a nice all-black package (Intel Core 2 Duo, Dual Core, 2.66GHz, 400 GB RAM) with a sleek ASUS 22-inch flatscreen monitor and was all hyped-up, seeing that it came along with the Windows Vista Home Premium edition.

And it was a joy using that PC, tellya.

Cut to four months later:

One evening, Vista starts uploading an update. The system starts up again. Then comes the same Vista screen. We go back to the beginning. System starts up again. And so on and so on. At one point, I had it running for four hours straight - not one (!!) single percent progress. I was caught in a deadly, endless loop.

So, surprisingly calm, I returned the tower to the shop where I had bought it, for it to be sent straight to the manufacturer.

Up to this point, I believed it was all just down to a software issue with Vista - which, taking the update glitch for granted, I thought it was.

Three weeks later, I get to pick it up again.

I installed it at home, put all the cables back where they belonged and switched the power on.

I couldn't believe what I saw.

I had to restart Vista from scratch again, entering the Microsoft Keycode and alike.

All my settings had gone, all programs, all pictures, all videos, all of my folders.

Now, after another few days of trying to get either customer support on the line and acting as my own customer service (that quest in itself was an epic game of ping pong), I finally find out that the manufacturer had to replace the old harddrive, as that piece of sh*t was the cause of all of my PC havoc.

Talking to a lady on the phone, the manufacturer then had the decency of informing me that they're not obliged to save personal data stored on the harddrive. They usually just ship it back to the maker (in my case, to China >_< ).

I was all depressed, :@ and frustrated and vented those feelings at her. I know it wasn't completely the right thing to do, but I was just devastated.

Neither the manufacturer nor the vendor (shop) had the initiative/guts/kindness/foresight of informing me of this drastic step in advance.

On top of that, the manufacturer was cheeky enough to offer me data recovery, but at an outrageous price!

Luckily enough, I had most data stored on an external harddrive before that - though I only used that harddrive as an storage device for my laptop.

But imagine what it'll take me to get back where I was before.

Anyone had similar experiences?

I had some MAJOR issues with Dell abit back, they ain't bad nowdays with me tho..dunno if me telling more or less everyone to go fook a goat had anything to do with them giving me respect? or maybe there secrets had been found out and they really were fooking goats?

My hard drive was playing up, i rung them up, spent ages on the phone, started getting annoyed with there stupid replies back, then being put to another person/department part, then talking to someone else, then them telling me it was a windows issue, then reinstalling to find out it was a hard drive issue all along, ringing back up, them trying to fob me off with the EXACT same thing but i told them NO it's a damn hard drive issue and finally getting a replacement PC.....

..GUESS WHAT?

2 weeks later hard drive fails again! nearly go through the exact same shit i went through 1st time, but managed to get another replacement PC and this time it was ok, i assume the replacement i got before was my original PC and they had just reinstalled the bugger to try con me off!

Vista is sh!te.

Avoid, unless it comes with service pack 1.

In my case it reads:

Samsung harddrives are sh!te.

Because that fella was the root of all my PC evil.

or use linux!?

Unless you do lots of work with Adobe Master Collection CS3 and can't be bothered with WINE and don't have the stupid money for a Mac.

I built me own as a project about 2 years ago, never had any problems with it, I know exactly whats inside and what upgrades I need, and best of all it was cheaper than buying one!

I tried doing that with my first girlfriend out of some boxes, a pillow and parts of a hoover.

I still miss her tranquil ways.

My laptops hard drive broke and ended up being wiped, which wasn't too convenient when I was two weeks away from handing in coursework. Now I'm having to settle for some average grades all at the cost of one problem. Life's harsh.
