Ultra Posted 30 May 2008 Posted 30 May 2008 From Sky's website.. Southampton have announced that Jan Poortvliet will take over from Nigel Pearson for the new Championship season. Pearson was only appointed as manager at St Mary's in February and he succeeded in keeping the club out of the relegation zone on the final day of the season. However, following this week's power change Southampton have decided not to renew Pearson's contract when it expires next month. Former Holland player Poortvliet has now been named as head coach in what the club has described as a 'new continental set-up'. Poortvliet, who has previously had spells in charge of Den Bosch, Roosendaal and Stormvogels Telstar in his homeland, will be joined by fellow Dutch coach Matt Wotte. Southampton's new coaching programme which will also heavily involve reserve team boss Stewart Henderson and youth team coach Dave Hockaday. Chairman Michael Wilde told the club's official website: "We are extremely grateful for Nigel's contribution. He came to the club at a time of crisis and through his hard work and commitment we were able to avoid relegation on the last day. "However, the board have been looking closely at the situation on the playing side of the club whereby we are inevitably going to have to depend to a large extent on the quality of our youngsters in the academy and the reserve team. "Our view on that was we would need to adopt a European-style coaching system comprising head coach, with the objective of linking the academy to the first team. "The board believe this will create opportunities for our younger players, which might not occur within the traditional English management structure." Bit of a risk by the saints, appointing a coach with no previous knowledge of English football. But I don't think Pearson's a serious contender for a job with us.
Papa Shango Posted 30 May 2008 Posted 30 May 2008 Trust me you would love Pearson, he's a class act. I'm absolutely gutted he's gone.
Number 6 Posted 30 May 2008 Posted 30 May 2008 Pearson would be a great appointment, I think he will be overlooked though.
Joe. Posted 30 May 2008 Posted 30 May 2008 Pearson would be a great appointment, I think he will be overlooked though. Really? There's a long list of people I'd like above Pearson, I personally believe he'd be an absolutely terrible appointment.
Fox You Forest Posted 30 May 2008 Posted 30 May 2008 Really? There's a long list of people I'd like above Pearson, I personally believe he'd be an absolutely terrible appointment. Makes two of us.
Ultra Posted 31 May 2008 Posted 31 May 2008 The only time I'd back Pearson would be in a two-horse race between him and Gregory. And even then, it would be a close thing.
C-man Posted 2 June 2008 Posted 2 June 2008 I heard 97% of Saints fans wanted him to stay. I think 97% of City fans wouldn't want him.
lavrentis Posted 2 June 2008 Posted 2 June 2008 I heard 97% of Saints fans wanted him to stay. I think 97% of City fans wouldn't want him. Well our judgement of Managers is fantastic in the past
Mark Posted 2 June 2008 Posted 2 June 2008 I heard 97% of Saints fans wanted him to stay. I think 97% of City fans wouldn't want him. Similar situation to Rob Kelly here, saved them from relegation and the fans thought he deserved a crack at it next season. Shocking record overall, and unlike us with Kelly they got rid and are starting a fresh. PEarson works best as an assistant/coach.
act smiley Posted 2 June 2008 Posted 2 June 2008 I think a lot of that is altered by the guys they got to replace him. The director of football at least has a few things on the CV, but the manager has been bouncing around the Dutch First Division for quite a while without ever really doing anything - his biggest achievements are taking over FC Den Bosch for one season and getting them back up at the first attempt... but not actually being there for the season after. His most recent exploits include getting replaced by former Swindon defender Luc Nijholt at Stormvogels Telstar and a midtable finish at his most recent job.
Tilley Posted 5 June 2008 Posted 5 June 2008 Aren't Southampton having problems with their new managers former club, They didn't even want to let him go or they haven't reached a compensation deal yet
